A big WTF moment on facebook...
Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 04:47 PM by Kitty Herder
So I logged into facebook to follow Arcadian's suggestion and I was confronted by my newsfeed being filled up with responses to this poll:

Dawna voted in the Obama School Address Response Poll along with over 13,164 other people.

Should President Obama be allowed to address the nation's school children without a response from the opposition?
- Yes
- No
- I don't care

They all voted NO! It made my blood boil.

WTF? I knew the crazies on Fox were going off on this, saying Obama is trying to "indoctrinate" the children. (To do what? Stay in school? How terrible.) But these friends of mine on facebook are just ordinary people who never show any interest in politics.

I'm wondering how, or if I should respond to this. Any advice?

9. It's a facebook poll. Of course it's not legitimate. What disturbs me is
that I encountered 5(!) of these "No" votes on that poll on my newsfeed. I'm concerned about what my usually apolitical friends are thinking. Serioulsy. This is freaking weird.

11. My first reaction
was to ignore it as well. But honestly, would the nutcases of the world have gotten as far as they have if we weren't apt to ignore them when they do or say things that are really nonsense? Maybe we need to stand up to this foolishness more often? What would you lose? A friend? Do you really want someone deranged enough to think that as a friend?

Of course Ive stood up to the birther nonsense on facebook to my family. I did end up un-friending them, so if you want peace ignore. If you want peace of mind, have your say.

16. That's the dilemma, isn't it?
I don't want to lose friends, but this is utter nonsense and shouldn't go unchallenged. I get the feeling they rely on Fox for their news so they likely never hear an opposing viewpoint that isn't shouted down.

5. If the GOP wants somebody like Sarah Palin
to give an "Opposing view" to a call to stay in school and study, I'd like to watch that.

10. That's what I'm thinking.
It would be interesting to see how these people react to having their children hear an opposing view that tells them, "Oh, go ahead. Drop out. Don't study."

I'm sure that would go over well.

I'm concerned about my friends. They're freepers!

18. Yes, These are very decent people.
Honest, kind, hardworking, devoted parents.

They're just delusional on this issue and I would probably find that they are on many others if I talked with them about politics much. They probably get all their news from Fox. Thing is, I always feel the need to challenge ignorance when I encounter it.

It's so difficult to not challenge everything nutty thing they say. But it is neverending unfortunately.

24. It is difficult.
My brother and his wife are freepers and out and out racists. It's hard not to go off on them when they express hate towards non-whites. Sometimes, I can't help it and I challenge them. My sister-in-law pretty much hates me because of it, so I try harder now to keep my lip zipped and our relationship is improving. But it bothers me so much when I hear the things they say about people and realize that's what they're teaching their kids.

19. Bobby Jindal giving the opposing message to "Stay in school. Study hard."
That would be absolutely priceless. It would reveal unequivically how far the American right has fallen.
