Santa Cruz considers expanded smoking ban

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.—Santa Cruz is poised to expand outdoor smoking bans to the city's downtown commercial district and the main street running along the beach.

The City Council is set to consider on Tuesday a proposed measure that would also prohibit smoking within 25 feet of commercial doorways, windows and air ducts.

City Councilman Ryan Coonerty says the bans are aimed at cleaning up the streets of cigarette butts and reducing the amount of tobacco smoke in heavily populated areas.

1. they couldn't make an argument based on reducing cigarette butts
if everyone didn't know they were all there.

some smokers (not all of course) are ruining it for everybody, most notably, polite and non-littering smokers.

2. Wouldnt matter, the nannies would still ban it
For a supposedly "liberal" area the communities in and around SF are some of the most draconian about controlling behavior they disapprove of.

6. It's a little tough to sniff up much second hand smoke
Out of doors with a stiff ocean breeze. I think these people need to be a little more tolerant of those beleaguered with the smoking addiction, and enforce their litter laws instead.

7. Bullcrap
Indoors, yes.

Outdoors you're making excuses for not being real liberals that let people live their life without someone looking over their shoulder.
