Did anyone else just see that scary commercial on ESPN on IBM
and how wonderful data mining is? Of course they didn't say data mining, and they mentioned some wondrful benefits regarding quicker emergency response times, lower crime rate, etc. But data mining is what helps them establish the patterns they mentioned to "build a smarter planet."

1. Was it this one?

Yeah, they are talking about data mining and machine learning.

The commercial implies that they are using these techniques to better understand the data they already have, like crime reports. I think I'm OK with that.

The thing that makes me totally lose my shit is when the government is mining data it shouldn't have, like our phone calls, emails, and financial transactions. Like it started doing under Bush, and like it's still doing today, AFAIK.

This (as presented in the commercial) seems like a pretty appropriate use of data mining technology, though.

3. My concern is how they are going to assemble all the pieces of a patient's medical history
electronically to serve that patient better without violating HIPAA privacy laws. I strongly suspect those may de facto be out the window already.

4. That was only a very small part of it, if they mentioned med records at all.
The rest was about information gathering, supposedly to keep us safe. But alot of it probably involves information that is no one's business, except to be used to manipulate us.
