I figured out how to make everyone happy regarding the public option
Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 10:00 PM by Tony_FLADEM
Medicaid should be phased out and replaced with a public option. People who are currently on Medicaid would receive a subsidy and would have the choice of being in the public option or participating in the private health insurance exchange.

Those who want the public option would have it and the Health Insurance Companies would have the opportunity to have the business of millions of new customers (those being brought into the system and the people on Medicaid). This would be true competition.

5. Those people are being brought into the system when reform is enacted.
They will be getting a subsidy to participate.

8. I agree we should get rid of Medicaid

It's really simple what could be done. Allow anyone under 65 to buy into Medicare. Base premiums on monthly income. If they don't want to, they can keep the plan they already have. Provide subsidies for people that cannot afford to buy in.

You'd simultaneously insure the uninsured and save Medicare from bankruptcy.

10. I like your idea even better.
This would be a net gain for Medicare. The system would get an infusion of funding and the new people would use the system less than the +64 individuals already on it.
