Ttoddler lost in Yukon gets to keep dog he followed
I really thought this was going to end badly, but thank goodness for that dog.

A two-year-old boy lost in the Yukon bush overnight after wandering away from his family's campsite will get to keep the dog he followed.

The toddler, identified only as Kale, wandered away from a campsite north of Ross River, Yukon, on Thursday.

1. Great dog and nice of the owner to let the child keep him, but...
I'd sooner tear off my arm, then let one of my beloved doggies go... I'm not sure I could be that selfless (though perhaps the family didn 't have quite the attachment I have to all my "babies.")

10. I guess the owner's kids weren't too happy about it:
Dolan said she was happy to let the boy keep the dog.

"We gave Koda to them because he, obviously, helped play a big part in making sure the baby survived."

Dolan said her own kids weren't immediately keen on the idea of giving their dog away.

"I have two children, two boys of my own, that were kind of upset about my decision until they met the family … and understood the situation a little better," she said.

"I think they feel very happy that the dog will have a lovely home. I'm sure he'll be spoiled completely and live a long, happy life."

2. I don't understand giving the dog away, either
I'd give him lots of pats and hugs and "Good dog!" accolades. And I'd feel even more attached to him.

3. If this were america...
There would be a lynch mob ready to string up these parents. Matter of fact I kind of expect some of my fellow DU'ers are already wrapping a verbal noose for 'em.

Lucky kid. He got to wander around on his own for over a day, AND he got a puppy. All I ever got was a sore butt.

7. Yeah, lucky kid.
If fallen down a hillside and broke his neck he'd be even luckier. :eyes:

8. And if aliens had picked him up and dissected him, that'd be even worse!
Or, oh! Oh! What if he blundered headfirst into a horde of klondike prospector zombies? They're all "Braaaaaaaains, tyarnation, braaaaaaaaains, dangfuddled braaaaaaains"

...Of course, he didn't fall, he didn't get abducted, and he didn't run into some zombies. He did get a puppy, however.

5. I wondered what the dog was doing out there. Apparently the dog had been missing for almost a week,

9. Sounds like they brought each other home. That dog is an important guardian for that baby...
This may sound strange, but it reminds me of the Border Collie my mother told me she had from the time she was three. I think her family lived in a small town, but she would wander everywhere with that dog with a complete sense of security and he always brought her home. She said to me, "I thought he was my brother." Some dogs are like that.

I trust Kale's parents have learned from what surely must have been a terrifying experience for them. There's certainly no need for strangers like us to heap curses on them. It was more than kind of Koda's owner to realize he had probably bonded with Kale in what they went through together.

Strange story with a happy ending.

Hekate
