MONROE, Mich. (AP) - Officials will provide free anti-radiation pills to people who live or work within 10 miles of Michigan's nuclear power plants.

The potassium iodide pills can partially protect the thyroid gland from radiation exposure if there is a nuclear accident.

Previously in Michigan, such pills were to be distributed following an accident.

1. I think the idea is that if there is a nuclear event no one would be able to get the pills in time
Can you imagine trying to find where to get the pills after there was a nuclear event. Now they will be waiting in your medicine cabinet.

5. They're doing this in PA, too.
In fact, it was done there before and they're now sending out new pills as the old ones have hit the expiration date.

9. You forgot the sarcasm thingy, but you are on to something
The Bush administration ignored the intelligence reports about increased communication 'chatter' concerning an upcoming attack on the WTC.

:tinfoilhat: It would not take much stretch of the imagination that there are intelligence reports about 'chatter' at a nuclear facility. Our President may not be taking chances.

If I lived near a nuke plant and was given a supply of anti-radiation pill, I would keep my car with a full tank of gas and my 'Oh no! backpack' handy :tinfoilhat:

8. Been SOP for a long time. The pills expire though...
...and need periodic replacement. The PA distribution is to replace timed-out PI pills.

13. It is indeed common practice.
FirstEnergy, aka Worst Energy, aka Last Energy, distributes them to people living within the same radius of the Davis-Besse and Perry (OH) and Beaver Valley (PA) plants.

12. We used to get those every year when we were living near New London, CT.
I saved all of ours for the "big one" should we be so unlucky to survive.
