So the new Florida Senator LeMieux's law firm arranged visas for the
foreign workers in the...wait for it...construction sector while the local workers lost their jobs. Now they're saying that the foreign workers were skilled.

Not so says the union workers in Florida.

1. persuaded state dept that Mexican workers had special skills that Americans didn't
Amid charges of political cronyism and claims he was picked to be the governor's proxy in Washington, there is renewed scrutiny of LeMieux's dealings and those of his law firm, Gunster Yoakley & Stewart:

• The law firm, chaired by LeMieux, helped foreign workers get visas last fall to help build a high-rise hotel and condos in Miami, depriving dozens of Florida workers of jobs at a time of rising unemployment. CBS4 News in Miami first reported the law firm's efforts, which included persuading the U.S. State Department that the Mexican workers had special skills that Americans didn't. In a statement, the firm said LeMieux had no involvement in any immigration matters.

4. CBS had a good report
complete with a little girl crying over her laid off dad's inability to pay all the bills.
Rethugs are amazing - they whip up their base to be anti-immigration while they abd their biggest supporters provide visas for cheap labor.

6. Maybe they were skilled but
no more so that the local guys. Where were the foreign guys from. Chances are the codes where they are from are below our standards. In that case they wouldn't have the experience necessary.

9. Yep. I watched $30/hr living wage jobs 20 years ago drop to $10-$15/hr.

During a fucking HOUSING BOOM! Remember: "they aren't hurting anybody", that's because blue collar Americans are NOBODY!

Those jobs had benefits and retirement. They turned into 1099 screwjobs.

10. The Mexican workers are perhaps more skilled only in matters of survival
they will accept substantially lower wages and reduced benefits for the same position.

They can live on substantially less income than US workers, it's the difference in their society and culture.

They can't do any better quality work than their US counterparts.

I would guess that most employers who put Mexicans on their payroll are not at all concered about quality, as they will be long gone after the work is done, the company will not be there to maintain the property or repair the shoddy work after it is installed and sold to the customer.

In other word, the rightwingers will push the ultimate economic responsibility on the unsuspecting consumer, all the while laughing all the way to the bank.
