They really cannot believe that Barack Obama won the election, especially having gone from complete unknown to the Presidency in such a short time. They also cannot believe that he won so many votes in normally Republican-voting areas, they conclude that Obama has some sort of charismatic ability to bend minds.

They don't want their kids to be exposed to it, since they feel they themselves are lucky to have been immune.

probably not but they would still be upset.
many americans, but most obviously the lunatic fringe, are struggling with cognitive dissonance.
we have been taught to view the market place as if it were a religion. and it has failed.
we have sucked the jingoistic teat of american imperialism (i mean, american exceptionalism)and believed in our good mission on earth and it has proven false. our government lied to take us to war, tortured foreign children in our prisons and done so many other horrible things that all americans believed only other, wicked regimes did.
this reality is enough to shock anyone. the more vested one is in a failed system the harder it is to accept the reality of the bad investment.
the fringe believe these are omens of the end times and they have given up even pretending to be sane.
obama's presidency is just one more bit of evidence that the world is upside down.
but most other americans, including obama supporters and obama himself, have yet to accept that we are a failed state.
some times machines get so broke that no amount of tweaking can make them run again.

Many of them just don't think it is proper for white children to be "talked down to" by a "negro."
