2. One great fear is that an intelligent, capable Afro-American will become
President of the United States and then want to indoctrinate our nation's children by giving an address to them early in the school year.

Talk about catastrophic.

I've been reading Capitol Men lately, and it doesn't seem all that historic too me. The past didn't go anywhere.

13. In some households last November there was apprehension and
resentment at the election results.

But in other households, there was jubilation.

The jubilation was the proper response. I'd like to see some of these school districts this week remind themselves of their original mission.

36. Race suicide. The denial is astonishing.
People today don't comprehend the sheer HORROR of what even a limited strike would do. Live by the sword. Die by the sword. I've always had the uneasy suspicion that these ghastly monsters will inevitably sound the death knell for our species.

Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 09:34 AM by Statistical
We have a one in 566 chance of a natural explosion over 1.1 megatons in our lifetime. If it were to hit an inhabited area it likely would be the largest instant loss of life in the history of man.

For those who are wondering:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_SG344

It isn't the largest rogue object in space but it is the one with greatest chance of hitting earth in next 100 years (that we know about).

32. I find it fascinating the number of solutions NASA is looking at if the asteroid is determined to be
a real danger. They have two astronauts working on a gravity-powered asteroid tractor. It could pull the asteroid into a new orbit. http://www.space.com/news/051109_asteroid_tractor.html

34. Yup pretty cool stuff however all plans require years or decades of warning
and sufficient space resources that launching a long range mission is routine in nature.

On a % basis the asteroid doesn't need to be moved much to miss the earth. Space is well mostly empty space.

However asteroids have tremendous momentum due to their large mass & high speed so it is like trying to turn a cruise liner by having a swimmer push against one side of its bow. You could do it but it would take decades to alter the course even a single degree.

33. pretty much.
since the tech crash, i've settled on a financial crash being what does us in, rather than a natural disaster or even da bomb. my current expectation is that the money woes combined with, and partly caused by a shortage of resources, will eventually reach the point the entire economy as we know it grinds to a halt. of course when that happens the likelihood of an actual apocalyptic event to finish us off goes up greatly.

37. my kids are scared of the world "ending" in 2012, whatever "ending" means
Some friend of theirs told them about the Mayan prophesy. (Which I diligently googled to try to help them get over their fears, and apparently the non-OMG thinking is that it's not that the world will blow up or anything, there'll just be a big shift in the way things work--according to some interpretations, for the better. Unfortunately, the bulk of the stuff on the Internets has an OMG slant, so they still don't believe me.)

When I was a kid I read a book of mystics' predictions, etc, and became absolutely convinced that the world would end in 1999.

I also went to a speech by Helen Caldicott (was that her name?) and was terrified that there would accidentally be a nuclear war.

40. Not really.
Not so much expecting as wondering when it will happen and what it will be. And not all my life, only after I was old enough to grasp what the book of Revelations was all about.

Then as I grew up I learned about meteorites and super volcanoes and then I read the HAB theory and learned about quasars and gamma rays...

So yeah, kinda, but not really.
