The real issue as always is media control (Imus)
Until now, Imus has received $10 million a year to spout off, as one of a few hundred demagogues, to an audience of millions. This isn't free speech, it's all too well paid.

The real problem is the media model. The government licenses private owners of the airwaves, who seek revenues by selling a product (you, the audience) to advertisers. The result unsurprisingly is a top-down propaganda system.

Radio waves travel everywhere and constitute a public good (as government licensing of stations implicitly acknowledges). Imus and everyone else should have equal access to the system. That would be free speech.
