11. Whatever - this is DEMOCRATIC Underground - you must have it confused with OBAMA Underground
I'm an activist Democrat who has put 5000 dollars and 5000 manhours into the Democratic Party and Democratic candidates including Congressman Grayson, John Edwards in 2007/2008, Kerry in 2003/2004 and then Kerry Edwards in 2004, 4 state house rep candidates in FL (Randolph, Soto, Sasso, and Bacallao), the Rod Smith campaign for governor, Homer Hartage for Congress, Jim Davis for Governor in the general, Bill Nelson for US Senate, and numerous county and city candidates - if you want to pretend to be a Democrat and pretend to stand for Democratic principles, I'll find a REAL Democrat to show you the door. I've already done once to a state house rep and kept another DINO from winning a Congressional seat by working to get Grayson elected as well.

Why did he hand it off to Congress and let them screw it up?

If he HAD been leading on healthcare, he wouldn't be back in front of Congress tonight for a Mulligan.

21. It is more the lack of party leadership and discipline
Edited on Wed Sep-09-09 06:43 PM by Juche
Say what you want about the GOP, but they had leadership and discipline. We do not. We have Obama begging for a handful of republican votes and we have Harry Reid.

If the dems had discipline and leadership this wouldn't be a problem. Take the senators who object and strip them of committee chairmanships. Then refuse to campaign or fund raise for them. If they agree to help pass needed reform offer them chairmanships, fundraising and campaign help.

Here is my problem with Obama. Its not the simplistic 'he won't cure cancer overnight' strawman you are making. It is that he honestly seems to be a wimp.

In 2006 Joe Liberman begged Obama (who was a popular senator after the 2004 speech at the convention) to help him win against Lamont. Obama did, and Lieberman won. Now we have Liberman instead of Lamont, who would've supported a public option (Lieberman is opposed to a public option).

Lieberman responds by supporting McCain in 2008, and even saying things like '60 dem senators will mean the end of america'. He spoke at the republican convention in 2008.

How did Obama respond? He refused to defend himself or retaliate. How did Obama respond after he won the election? He refused to retaliate. He said 'let Lieberman keep his committee chairmanships'.

So now on healthcare Lieberman is siding with the GOP (again). What is the response? Abandon the dem base and water down health reform so people like Lieberman are happy with it.

Obama helps Lieberman get elected to the senate over a progressive candidate like Lamont

Lieberman retaliated by trying to get McCain elected over Obama, and bad mouthing Obama

Obama refuses to defend himself or fight back

After Obama wins, he refuses to hold Lieberman accountable by encouraging anyone to take away his chairmanship.

Lieberman now is one of the few dems who doesn't support a public option (Lamont would've supported one)

Something is deeply wrong.

Let me ask you a question. In 2010 when Obama campaigns for and fund raises for Specter over Sestak (which he agreed to do), are you going to consider his speeches in favor of electing Specter to be moving, impressive or motivational?

With supporters like that- who needs republicans?

Your ideal president only exists in your dreams- and when you wake up and find he or she is actually human, you'll be disillusioned and crying about how you are going to fight for their replacement, and so it will go.

38. There is an echo in here ....
you asked "don't you think he knows what the score is?" That reminds me uncomfortably of what people used to say to those of us who opposed Lyndon Johnson's Viet Nam policy. People would say, "Don't you think the President knows what he's doing?" Did he? We can't ask all of the people who died for the "domino theory" what they think, but no he didn't know what he was doing. No one did. The situation spun out of control and crashed hard. People are still feeling the repercussions.

As to the other part of your post, Obama could be hurting a lot of people. If the health insurance initiative is botched it means real financial damage and in some cases real death. Is that not supposed to hurt?

What about Afghanistan? What has been achieved there? Is that not commensurate with Iraq and Viet Nam?

What about torture prosecutions? Is torture now going to be national policy to the point where those responsible are not held accountable in any way? That will hurt all of us, because if you condition people to accept crimes against humanity as if they were just a cost of doing business, then you can expect to see far worse down the road. We used to protect people in other countries against torture, at least in our official policies, now they see that we are no better than their own torturers were. Try to regain their trust and the trust of a lot of the rest of the world community when the U.S. has no credibility to deal with. That is what Bush did for us, but what is Obama doing to repair it?

He may not be a bad man, but good men can do bad things.
