In order to cover his tracks in a kludgy, clumsy sort of way:

“If you keep sending e-mails, it will probably get overwritten pretty quickly, and then it’s really gone,” he said.

2. Maybe they should try Major Geeks!
"NTFS Undelete is free software that allows you to recover deleted files. It recovers files directly from hard drive, and it will work even if you empty Recycle Bin.

Before downloading NTFS Undelete, please consider the following:
When you delete a file, its content physically remains intact on the media, but the occupied space becomes marked as free. Next file saved to the disk may overwrite the contents of the deleted file.

It is very important to make sure that no application writes to the drive or partition where deleted file is located since every new file (even a small one) may overwrite the deleted file."

4. It's been over a year for all, over two years for some e-mail.

What are the chances that somebody's used the server since then?

6. This is just an example. The *really* good ones are on the main page
they have some that say they can recover any file, even from damaged drives.

9. I've seen data recovered from damaged drives.
I reconstructed a file allocation table once; that was one of the least pleasant (without being downright objectionable) tasks for a job I had long ago. Fortunately, the disk drive was all of 10 MB, and was only half full.

But I've never seen anything useful come from a disk drive that had been overwritten scores of times. If they're lucky, they'll find bits on backups from the RNC/WH servers, or the backups from the most likely servers that outgoing or incoming e-mail would have been routed to.
