The President made the point in his speech the other night. He needs to keep reminding America of this fact. We should not be a country that throws our citizens overboard. We are all in this boat together. United we stand, divided we fall.
If the private sector works so well, why do we still have 46 million people without health coverage? Sometimes we have to unite as a government to accomplish things that we cannot do as individuals or as insurance companies. There are some things that private enterprise cannot do. Just as they refused to build railroads through the West in the 19th century. It was not cost-effective.
The President made the point in his speech the other night that our predecessors understood the limits of government but also understood the limits of the market place. He said that they understood the danger of too much government but that it was balanced by the "perils of too little government". It was a statement in support of liberal government and the need to take care of all our citizens.
And I shake my head when I hear "Christians" (the kind who literally wear their faith on their sleeves--or rather, tee shirts) at a town hall meeting braying about health care being a privilege and not a right. I can't help but wonder if they've ever read the words of their prophet, Jesus? He said "Whatsoever you do unto the least of these you do unto Me."
