“Moderate Republicans” own the haters

“Moderate Republicans” own the haters

An article in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram by Bud Kennedy, 9/12/09, outlines the concerns of Gen. Tom Daniels that “something is wrong in America.” The reactions we are seeing from the right wing "nuts", particularly in regards to President Obama, he fears, are nothing more than “unabated racism.”
I share the General’s concerns, but let me point out a few things that he has conveniently missed.

General Daniels notes that he loved President George H.W. Bush, and inquires, “Where are the moderates in the Republican Party? Where are the people like George Bush who made sense? They’re letting the nuts lead them around by the nose."

He is talking about the same President Bush who’s own road to the White House was paved by his protégé Lee Atwater’s race bating campaign ads. He is talking about the same “moderate Republicans” and Reaganites who coddled the extreme right wing, negligently thinking that they could control the racism and hate only to see them become bulls in our national China Shop.

Kennedy adds: “I know what some of you are going to say. It’s political, not racial.” Unfortunately it is both. Republicans courted these “nuts” for their crass political purposes. Now they have to live with their “unabated racism.”

I must admit, I am a little weary of hearing these non mea culpas from Republican enablers. To quote one “Republican moderate,” Gen. Colin Powell, the ”Pottery Barn Rule” applies here: You bought ‘em, you own ‘em.

1. Excellent.
The Republicans do own the wackos now. They failed to repudiate them when they could and now they're stuck on them, like the piece of toilet paper that's stuck to your shoe. Or a bad case of herpes.
