I'm rethinking taking that job offer in Japan
Edited on Sat Sep-12-09 07:19 AM by rpannier
I've been offered a job with in Japan a few times and have turned it down.
Now, I've learned that the Japanese have the longest life expectancy (although not for males -- that's Iceland)

While the US is 38th (Although Kuwaiti men live longer)

At least I live in Korea which is 34th

On a bright note for Americans -- Americans live slightly longer than the Portuguese, but not as long as people from Hong Kong, Cyprus, Singapore, Malta or the US Virgin Islands

on edit:
Yes, this is a health care related post

1. A lot of that is diet related rather than health care related.

2. Have you ever BEEN to Japan????
Trust me when I tell you, the lifestyle is ANYTHING but healthy (rice and rotten soybean meals notwithstanding)...

Heavy smoking, binge drinking, high stress jobs, little rest and relaxation.

If not for health care being pretty decent, I'd think most Japanese would drop dead in their 40's!

(I stick to the rice and rotten soybean meals just in case though lol)

7. I really doubt their health care is better than that of any of the Western European

countries and yet their life spans are longer. They don't eat fatty foods like Westerners do. We like our red meat and it kills us a few years earlier than we otherwise would die.

FYI, despite taking that extremely condescending tone you didn't dispute my assertion on diet. In fact you confirmed it.

11. Sorry you thought it was condescending, I didn't mean for it to be.
Just pointing out that, DESPITE their excellent dietary habits (unfortunately getting worse though, now that double quarter pounders are all the rage) which I would not dispute and did not, there are tons of other factors that I would say mitigate the healthy eating.

But you didn't dispute that, either. ;)

9. When I was there in the mid-90s it seemed like every man there smoked. Heavily.
A lot of the women too but all of the men.

12. What about all that Mercury in the huge amount of fish they eat?
Why is it they don't have a health epidemic from the Mercury where many here in America are told to avoid so many fish because of the high Mercury content?

5. personally, i'd much rather live in the u.s. than japan.
Edited on Sat Sep-12-09 08:42 AM by dysfunctional press
i pretty much wouldn't want to live in any country with such a homogeneous population.

the u.s. is fairly unique in respect to the makeup of the populace- although there are wide sections of it that i could probably do without.

plus- the population density in japan compared to the u.s. is another thing that i just couldn't deal with.

i don't know what aspects of japan you find far better than america- but for most of the quality of life issues that affect me personally- i find america to be far better place to live than japan.

8. Presumption of guilt in the criminal justice system, bizarre censorship laws, and
a total lack of space. I so want a piece of that....not.

10. Statistics can make you crazy

I know. I work in the department of Statistics in UC Berkeley. Crazy hardly begins to describe some of their office parties.
