Sources tell the Chicago Tribune that Christopher Kelly, a key figure in the corruption investigation of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D), has died.

Neither the local Cook County medical examiner's office nor Kelly's lawyer could provide additional information on Sunday, including how Kelly died and when, the newspaper reported.

Kelly on Tuesday plead guilty for his role in a $8 million kickback fraud involving American Airlines, United Airlines, local O'Hare airport and his own company, BCI Commercial Roofing, Inc. He would have likely spent about eight years in prison for that crime and a previous tax offense, the Chicago Sun-Times reported -- in addition to whatever penalties federal investigators imposed his involvement in Blagojevich's alleged pay-to-play scheme.

"The office said Kelly died of salicylate intoxication. According to medical reference guides, salicylates are used in anti-inflammatory and pain relief medications. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday."

I tried to take myself out that route once long ago and far away.
