We need a march against racism.
This is really getting out of hand. These people know no boundaries and are encouraging assassination. Who's with me? I'll help organize it.

1. I am with you
as much as I can help.

I fear these racists will do ANTHING in their power to have Pres Obama fail and it scares the living daylights out of me.

I am scared as to what lengths they will go.

What would it take to organize it? I'd be willing to do what I can.

6. I found this---I'm calling to get an application
Edited on Sat Sep-12-09 05:31 PM by graywarrior
Step
1
Start planning at least three months ahead of your anticipated march. Permits are approved within 48 hours but you can submit them up to a year or more in advance. The earlier you start, the better.

Step
2
Contact the National Parks Permit Office by calling (202) 619-7225. Ask them to fax you a permit application.

Step
3
Visit the Dcpages website for a map of the District of Colombia. Determine the protest gathering point, march route and rally area. Print the map by hitting the ¨Print Screen¨ button on the keyboard. Use a yellow highlighter to plot out the different protest points on the map.

Step
4
Call the National Parks Permit Office again; Ask them for the availability dates on the gathering location, march route and rally point. Once they have confirmed availability, proceed to fill out the entire application.

Step
5
Make sure to specify the estimated number of people participating in the protest and the main contact person. That person must sign and date the application.

Step
6
Make a copy of the application and the highlighted map for your records.

Step
7
Mail the original application and highlighted map to: National Parks Permit Office, Room 128, 1100 Ohio Drive Southwest, Washington, District of Colombia 20242.

Step
8
Wait about a week for a National Parks Agent to call. This agent will be specifically assigned to your organization for the permit application process. Have the agent give you her direct extension for further questions and information.

Step
9
Provide the agent with any additional information he may need to approve the permit. Ask him to fax you the approved permit immediately and mail the original back to you.

Step
10
Start campaigning for participants with your permit in hand. The National Parks Permit Office will take care of notifying the District of Colombia Police and other city organizations that require special events notification. It's that simple!

9. I AGREE! making it clear that is our agenda- not hiding or denying
reality- Being UP FRONT and very CLEAR that we aren't fooled, or fighting against something that doesn't exist.

This SHOULD be a chance for true "bi-partisan" unity. but i would be surprised if that happened.

12. IDEA
We need to do this as friends from DU. Either rally here, apply in our name or, get as many people here interested to sign on and then turn it over to another group, OR we march across the country in every state.

13. Great idea, but keep your expectations realistic and see if you can get some groups to co-sponsor it
Edited on Sat Sep-12-09 06:22 PM by Bjorn Against
Organizing a large march is a tremendous amount of work and if you want this to have a big turnout you will need some money to get a big turnout. The place to start is not in securing the permits, the place to start is in forming a coalition of people. The permits can be secured once you have a plan in place, but coming up with a plan to organize thousands of people is crucial. Contact the NAACP and other major civil rights groups and try to recruit some people to help you, organizing these marches is a lot of work and the more help you can get the better.

Also don't be afraid of small protests, you only need a big crowd if you are going to promise a big crowd. Most protests I participate in are very small, but we get a very good reception from the people who pass by. If you advertise a huge national march and only a couple hundred people show up that does not look good, but if you are not advertising something huge then you are not embarrassed if it turns out to be a small crowd. Start by thinking small and then as you recruit more people you can expand those plans, if you start out thinking too big you are bound to be disappointed. Everyone wants to organize something huge, but it is much easier said than done and most effective organizers start out working with small groups of people. Please do organize something, but be realistic in your goals. Once you have those small successes the big successes will become easier to achieve, you can accomplish a great deal if you work at it but the key to success is to aim for simple yet visible actions. If you are creative you can get a lot of attention with just a few people, consider wearing costumes and think about ways you can find to put prominent right-wingers in uncomfortable situations. Remember we live in the age of YouTube and a small well thought out action can reach thousands if not millions of people, once you can inspire others to get involved then you can start building the network you need for large actions such as a march.

Good luck, and keep us updated on what kind of actions you are planning.

16. Thanks for the good info.
One person can start it, but obviously it needs lots of participation. One of the problems is that no one really wants to work at something like this to get it up and going.

We all do the talk, but doing the walk is a different story.

20. It is a different story, but we can all walk the walk if we set our minds to it.
I am really glad you are thinking about doing something like this, while dreams are often much bigger than what reality allows it is good to dream big as long as you are able to think small. I do hope that you go forward with organizing something, I think that you should start with a small action and see what creative ideas you can come up with.

Are there any particular right-wing political figures or organizations you would like to challenge? Instead of aiming for a broad concept like racism aim for the racist instead. People like Rush Limbaugh have clearly made a number of racist comments, Rush Limbaugh is broadcast on hundreds of radio stations across the country. You almost certainly have a station in your own community that broadcasts him, maybe organizing a small group of people to picket that station once a week would be something that you could start with. I am with a group that holds two different peace vigils every week, one of those vigils is held at the office of our far-right Congressman John Kline's office and the other is outside the local Lockheed Martin plant (Lockheed Martin is a major weapons manufacturer). We get a great response to these vigils and they are a lot of fun, just pick a local target whether it is the station that broadcasts Limbaugh or the office of a local politician. There is a lot you can do that is visible and does not require a huge amount of work, start with these actions and then as you get experience you can go for bigger things. I honestly believe that there is nothing in life that is more rewarding than activism, and it can be enormous fun as well. I really hope you do organize something because I know you will do good work, just start out small and you will be surprised at what you can accomplish with just a few people. Choose your targets wisely and you can be very effective with a small number of people, here is one example of a very effective protest my group did with only about a dozen people: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=5625575&mesg_id=5625575

If you are creative you don't need big groups of people, sometimes even one or two people can make a major impact. If you haven't read the book "The Legacy of Luna" by Julia Butterfly Hill I would strongly encourage it, what she did goes way beyond anything that I would ever be able to do but it is a very inspirational story about one person who showed a dedication to her cause beyond what many of us would think was humanly possible. I don't expect you will want to emulate Julia Butterfly Hill's actions and you may even think she is a bit crazy, but you will be inspired by the story nonetheless and it will make you think about the things that can be accomplished by even one person. While I am sure you won't want to go as far as Julia Butterfly Hill did think about what you and your closest friends can accomplish then set out to accomplish it, sometimes even a small action can turn into something much bigger.

All it takes is one person, one town, one state, one country and then the world. I HAVE to do something, that's for sure.

Edited on Sun Sep-13-09 03:06 PM by KittyWampus
There seems to be a large core of DU'ers who are obsessed with Racism as much as the Teabaggers.

It isn't not JUST racism.

It is Bigotry stemming from Ignorance and Fear.

And who starts a March against something? How unbelievably negative can you be?

You want to do something positive have a March FOR Tolerance.

Or Pro-Education.

Or Pro-Diversity

Damn, DU has gone insane along with the Teabaggers.
