Iowa: school officials strip-search five teen girls
And why does the school board reserve the right to do this—no parental consent required?

Family members said this week that Atlantic high school officials forced five teenage girls to remove their clothes during an investigation into a theft.

The girls' families and their lawyers said the incident at Atlantic High School amounts to a strip-search, which is illegal in Iowa schools.

But school officials said the search was "allowable" under board rules.

The search took place during a gym class after a classmate charged that $100 was stolen from her purse. And it wasn't just stripped down to underwear—one girl was stripped naked. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that no school official has free rein to do intimate searches of students. Making a girl pull the waistband of her underwear away from her body constituted a strip-search, the court ruled. And after the indignities heaped on these girls—the money was not found.

What do you think occurred as a result of this egregious behavior on the part of school officials?

Atlantic Interim Superintendent Dan Crozier has confirmed that an Atlantic administrator had been placed on administrative leave, but did not name the individual. Unconfirmed reports have identified Activities Director Paul Croghan as the individual placed on paid administrative leave, pending further investigation into the incident.

1. I can't remotely imagine a daughter of mine going along with such an order...
Infinitely more likely is me getting a call at work, finding out my daughter was arrested for punching the fuck out of some adult who told her to strip. At which point said adult would have much more pressing problems than my daughter.

2. These school "officials" violated a Supreme Court ruling?
Perhaps charges of child molestation should be brought against the "officials".

Considering what they didn't mind seeing.

4. Why wouldn't a kid refuse until their parent arrives?
If the clothes are then forcibly removed, whoa, Nelly there's a friggin lawsuit!

5. Kids are taught to obey authority. They are taught that certain people are trustworthy
I speak as a victim of a molestation by a priest. It is not that easy to stand up to authority as a youngster.

10. And the flip side of that coin is how kids won't do anything
an adult tells them to do.

16. Sadly, some kids are more scared of their parents than of anything at school.
As I recall, not all the girls even told their parents this had happened.

8. I can't believe in Atlantic IA
My first reaction is why would any kid have $100 in her purse. I am a working professional making a really good salary, and I never carry more than about $50 unless I am going out of town.

My next reaction is I hope a bunch of people lose their jobs (and maybe a few should spend some nights in prison).

If it was my daughters, I would be ready to kill someone.

12. True story why this does not surprise me
some years back we went to a gaming convention, and while we counted cents to get what we wanted at the dealers room... this ten year old brought out a debit card... he spent that day easily five times what we spent including the hotel.

Of course there are the few patients from really well to do families with quite a bit of cash on them when we ambulance crews picked them up.

Yep, I don't question. I also carry some cash on me, but that is the daughter of a holocaust survivor in me. Nothing extravagant, but 100 when the week starts is not unusual....

9. My wife is a middle school teacher
Ages about 12 to 14 years old. She said her 13 and 14 year olds would most likely go along with it because they are being told what to do by authority figures. She said any highschool kid should be taught to NEVER let this happen no matter what school authorities say to the students. It would be better to get expelled and transfer than to have the humiliation of a strip search.

14. I am talking to my middle school daughters tonight
to let them know that, if something like this every happens, to tell the school administrator that they will take expulsion before being searched.

11. Posted a while ago. Sick, evil shit. Some perverts need jail time over this.
It's girls, always girls. Why does it seem like school administrators are all sickos?
