6. Although I disagree that he was an idiot -- I think he was actually
a well-accomplished physician and very intelligent -- I do agree that anybody can interpret his writings to say whatever they want. Just like the Bible. :7

Nice knowing ya.

At least your spellchecker was working and your all-caps key wasn't stuck.

Still.

Dumb.

2. Well, he was an historical figure. I assume they're just telling the story
about his life, not trying to imply that he was truly able to portend the future.

20. History Channel has had several Nostradamus shows this week
Edited on Sun Sep-13-09 11:08 PM by csziggy
As well as the ones combining Nostradamus, Revelation, the Mayan Calendar, and whatever other prognosticators they could dredge up to predict the end of the world as of December 2012. <YAWN>

31. It's gotta generate good advertising revenue I'm guessing, otherwise they wouldn't
do stuff like this so often. They do have some great offerings, though.

3. The History Channel used to aggravate
me too -- when I had cable. After thousands of years of recorded human history, they can't seem to teach about anything other than Hitler and end-times prophecies.

10. It's entertainment. Sadly, too many believe it.
Edited on Sun Sep-13-09 11:12 PM by David Zephyr
The History Channel knows what people want to hear and they market it well.

That's why I'm enjoying the mania about 2012, it's non-Christian and it's more sci-fi like. There's a cool movie coming out in November and Adam Lambert will do the cover song. On YouTube you can search for 2012 music and see the hoopla. I think it's fun because most people know better.

The "Revelation of John" and Nostradamus stuff is more unnerving, because these folks are just crazy.

22. I think you're right.
Look, I'll admit, I'm a science fiction nut and love the entire dystopia / post-apocalyptic thing. Check out you tube under 2012. Have some fun.

7. It is laughable. And the 2012 stuff, well, at least that is fun.
There's a sci-fi blockbuster coming out in November on 2012 and it should be a hoot. Adam Lambert will do the cover song and there's some truly fun, science ficitionesque music videos on YouTube already on 2012.

But, seriously, other than that, Nostradamus and the Book of Revelations should not be taken seriously by anyone with a brain.

The 2012 thing? It's crazy, but it is fun especially since the Christians don't have a lock on this end of the world story, the Mayans do. In that, I take some solace.

27. Perhaps...
I don't constantly pay attention to what they're running but I do know that some of their shows are outstanding...they recently had a 2-hour show documenting how our national infrastructure is collapsing. Their Modern Marvels series is great for unraveling the details of modern conveniences, most of which we take for granted. And if you watched 3 or 4 episodes of their Universe show you would know as much about astronomy as anyone, save for the experts.
You would have to be a techno-geek to appreciate a lot of this.

As for the other, more sensational shows, well it is cable TV after all...

29. And what do you think pays for the shows that are truly worth watching?
The UFO. Nostradamus shit.

Which by the way as a science fiction writer is just a hoot.

Now purely hypothetical, since I did this to a character of mine. Imagine for a second that Nostra could actually see the future... I think I'd go nuts... and I have done that to the character, he is slowly going nuts. Yes, that character CAN see the future if he really tries. These days he avoids it.
