Obama slaps tariffs on Chinese tires.
"WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Friday slapped punitive tariffs on all car and light truck tires entering the United States from China in a decision that could anger the strategically important Asian powerhouse but placate union supporters important to his health care push at home."

"Obama had until Sept. 17 — next week — to accept, reject or modify a U.S. International Trade Commission ruling that a rising tide of Chinese tires into the United States hurts American producers. A powerful union, United Steelworkers, blames the increase for the loss of thousands of American jobs.

The federal trade panel recommended a 55% tariff in the first year, 45% in the second year and 35% in the third year. Obama settled on slightly lower penalties — an extra 35% in the first year, 30% in the second, and 25% in the third, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said."

1. I THINK HE DID A GREAT THING! China taxes imports to their country
to protect their interests, and we should as well.

3. Got any proof of that.
China is largest purchaser of US gain and US coal.

2. If you fire the first shot in a war then
you better be sure where you are going. I am all for balanacing our trade with China, but it won't be done on an ad hoc or one off basis. I am adopting a wait and see attitude.

We still need to address the issue with Chinese holdings of our Treasury debt, and our expectation to continue to pile up this debt.

4. Very risky move.
China retaliates, US retaliates, China seeks relief from WTO, US doesn't back down, other countries put tarriffs on US exports (exports make up about 30% of US economy).

5. Wish I had been wrong.
China said Sunday it would launch an anti-dumping investigation into U.S. sales of chicken and auto products, a move apparently in response to Washington's decision to impose punitive sanctions on Chinese tire imports late last week. China's Ministry of Commerce said it was starting proceedings after having received complaints that U.S. products were being sold in China at below-market prices, according to reports. The ministry has denied that the actions against U.S. producers are a form of protectionism.

This is how trade wars start.
