Did I miss a big storm?

This AP article about the Bodie Island lighthouse says it's located on Hatteras Island.

The last time I was down there, the lighthouse was located on Bodie Island.

I realize that storms on the Outer Banks create new inlets and cause existing inlets to fill in, so I guess it's possible that the part of Bodie Island with the lighthouse is now once again part of Hatteras Island.

But I try to keep up with the news and I haven't seen anything about it.

Or is the media just lazy and inept about even the most basic things?

Bodie Lighthouse is still on Bodie Island, and yes, media is lazy and inept -- just noticed the link: myfox9. That's tells us all we need to know. To be fair, it's all a big chain of islands which occasionally get "attached" to each other by storms, or the closing or opening of inlets. But still, to call its location Hatteras Island is to confuse everyone with the big lighthouse down at Hatteras.

It's attached to the Virginia mainland at the border.

Here's a map of Cape Hatteras, including Bodie Island, which is technically part of Hatteras.

Hatteras Island and Cape Hatteras National Seashore are not the same thing.

The former is an island. It's existed in various forms for thousands of years.

The latter is a national park. It was established in 1953. It includes parts of Ocracoke, Hatteras and Bodie Islands (Even though Bodie Island hasn't been an island since the inlet up at Currituck Sound filled in a couple hundred years ago).

I didn't realize it was getting a makeover though. :)
