Did GOP Know Joe Wilson Scream Was Coming?
Did GOP Know Joe Wilson Scream Was Coming?
By: Glenn W. Smith Monday September 14, 2009 7:25 am

There's something mighty strange about the immediate reaction of those listening as U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson screamed "you lie" at President Barack Obama. Look at these pictures.

Wilson Yells, Others Unfazed

No heads turn

Heads Turn

Now, all of us have been in a room when a scream comes out of nowhere. It's impossible not to look. Speaker Nancy Pelosi turned. Vice President Joe Biden Turned. Obama turned. Why aren't Wilson's Republican colleagues startled? Not one has turned to see what the outburst, coming from right next to them, is all about. This is, at the very least, quite odd. One thing that might account for the stoic response from those around Wilson is that they knew it was coming. Were they prepared? It's a question that should be pursued. Despite the feigned GOP repudiation of Wilson, one could conclude it was a planned disruption.

1. according to many teabagger's posts on twitter
the rumor is Beck put him up to it and convinced Wilson that if he did it that he would gather the mighty beck army and the full support of FOX news to back him up

2. Of course it was planned.
Give them an inch and they will become ruler.

This is why the House MUST REPRIMAND OR CENSURE.

3. Not defending him in any way, and I believe they did know, but...
to be sure, we'd need to see video of him doing the shout. There is a lag between the time the shout is made and a human can react. The picture may have been taken faster than the people sitting beside him could react. There was video of Obama's, Biden's and Pelosi's reactions, and that's what the second picture is from: a still of a video frame. The first image is a photograph without context of frame, so as evidence, this is pretty weak.

23. The simple reason is, he shouted it twice.
If it was a mistake, and unplanned, he would have said it, and got embarrassed or such. He did not. He said it louder the second time. It was meant to open the floodgates of resentment, that would be ushered in with maximum disrespect. That, to strip Obama of legitimacy.

6. Oh for gods sake...
At what millisecond in time were these photos taken?

The Joe Wilson photo looks like it's taken right at the moment he's yelling out "YOU...." (the entire phrase being "You lie!!!" If it's not getting a reaction, maybe it's because the entire phrase has not yet been spoken and people haven't heard it yet and the outrageousness of it hasn't penetrated yet.

When I hear something outrageous, I often don't react right away either, because I often am in disbelief that something so outrageous really got said.

And the photo of the Democrats' reactions...how long after the phrase was THAT one taken? Had the whole phrase been spoken yet at that point? Were there a few seconds in which a reaction could take place?

9. I saw a few reports here yesterday that indicated that he had yelled it earlier
but it was drowned out by the noise in the chamber... So he came back again and shouted it louder. So they knew what he had previously yelled and were apparently certain that he would yell it again.

10. the key words here....
"apparently certain"

Not "certain without a doubt"

Not "absolutely sure"

only "apparently certain".

Maybe they figured he wouldn't dare try it again. Maybe they figured he had expended whatever vitriol he was harboring by yelling the first time.

I mean, there all sorts of "maybe's" going on, but people are jumping on this like it's the Truth handed down on stone tablets from God.

Is there a link anyplace with evidence that he had made a similar outburst earlier but got drowned out? I haven't seen one...

11. By the time Wilson yelled,
it was obvious that Pres Obama was making one of the greatest speeches ever heard by the Congress and they HAD to do something to stem the influence the speech was starting to have on spellbound listeners, not just in Congress, but all over the country.

The Dems should do the reconciliation thing and let ALL the republicans yell. See what good that'll do then.

The first picture is at the moment of the utterance and the second is just a split second after.

16. Even sillier...
I looked at the video and timed the outburst with the Dem reaction...

the first photo is right at the moment of utterance and the second photo comes about 2 seconds after.

And two seconds is lots of time, as any football fan can attest to...

GOP plans quiet demonstration during president's speech
By: Byron York

Tonight some House Republicans are planning to attend the president's address to a joint session of Congress carrying copies of GOP health care bills. If the president says, as he has done on many previous occasions, that opponents of Democratic health care proposals have no plans of their own, those Republicans plan to hold up copies of their bills in protest.

"If the president decides again that he is going to assert that there is no plan on our side, we're going to show him that's not true," says one GOP aide.

Scripted beforehand, and got the drama they wanted.

Because they are racists - look at who did the screaming - one of the safest seats in the House of Representatives.

Nothing is just a coincidence anymore.

21. who needs photographs for evidence? crap like this DOES NOT HAPPEN BY ACCIDENT.
EVERY politician, particularly at the federal level, understands that the ONE taboo is that you don't call anyone an outright liar. there's code for that, you say they "have a problem with the truth" or "they need to recheck their facts" but you DO NOT use the word "lie" or "liar".

nevermind that ANY outburst during a presidential address before a joint session of congress would be gasp-worthy, using the word "lie" is simply unheard of.

*politicians simply do not self-destruct out of a momentary lack of impulse control unless sex, drugs, and/or money are involved.*

there's NO WAY that at least he felt there was an upside to it, and it's extraordinarily unlikely that he came to this conclusion on his own, without consulting other republican powers-that-be.

in particular, note that THE STORY BECAME THE OUTBURST, RATHER THAN THE SPEECH. they successfully derailed the news cycle, and that's huge in this battle. more strong suggestion that he at least heard from media heads that his "outburst" would achieve the desired result and that he would be protected in return.

Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 11:39 AM by TxRider
If you listen to the vid, the whole republican side gets loud ranting for a minute..

I think Joe just thought the whole repub side was going to get loud again and his "you lie" shout would be just a drowned out voice in the choir.

But the other repubs didn't do the "auto noise" at that particular break and he was caught out.

25. No, Not Planned. The Author Has His Tin Foil On Too Tight. And Those Falling For It Are Silly.
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 12:10 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
The picture of Joe is a still picture taken at the exact moment he started yelling (as others have stated). It is 100% reasonable and likely that those sitting next to him would have not yet had a reaction. Since this is the only evidence, and there were several reports that mentioned how the repub members overall in the chamber reacted afterwards, then the case the author is making is weak as can be and the concept itself is likely non-existent.

Could it have been planned to some degree? Who knows. If so, were several members beyond Joe involved? Highly unlikely.

Logic within this situation dictates that the theory the author proposes is simply made up in his head and a product of his searching for something, anything, to get attention and think he found some gotcha.

Those falling for it are silly, and putting this theory forth as if it carries legitimacy is even more silly.

26. I'm going to make this guess: Wilson was probably bitching through the whole speech and...
... those two got to hear most of it. They look like they're trying to ignore the buffoon to me. I bet they "knew" it was coming but not in a planned, premeditated fashion, no, they knew it was coming because they could see Wilson foaming at the mouth long before he blew his top.

29. Put yourself in that position and you understand why...
Have you ever had someone sitting beside you over react at an event?

1. They sat next to Wilson so they likely agreed with him. They probably wanted to drop through the floor when it happened because they probably instantly realized it was bad for their cause.

2. When the out burst occurred they knew it was Wilson because it was so close.

3. They were embarrassed and thus didn't react in order not to draw attention to themselves.
