My newspaper just called to confirm this ltte
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 03:47 PM by ashling
"Moderate Republicans own the "nuts"

An article by Bud Kennedy,in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, 9/12/09, outlines the concerns of Gen. Tom Daniels that “something is wrong in America.” The reactions we are seeing from the right wing "nuts", particularly in regards to President Obama, he fears, are nothing more than “unabated racism.”

I share these concerns, but let me point out a few things that he has conveniently missed.

General Daniels notes that he loved President George H.W. Bush, and inquires, “Where are the moderates in the Republican Party? Where are the people like George Bush who made sense? They’re letting the nuts lead them around by the nose."

He is talking about the same President Bush who’s own road to the White House was paved by his protégé Lee Atwater’s race bating campaign ads. He is talking about the same “moderate Republicans” and Reaganites who coddled the extreme right wing, negligently thinking that they could control the racism and hate, only to see them become bulls in our national China Shop.

Kennedy adds: “I know what some of you are going to say. It’s political, not racial.” Unfortunately it is both. Republicans courted these “nuts” for their crass political purposes. Now they have to live with their “unabated racism.”

I am a little weary of hearing these non mea culpas from Republican enablers. To paraphrase one “Republican moderate,” Gen. Colin Powell, the Pottery Barn Rule applies here: You brought ‘em, you own ‘em.

8. Really excellent!
We should all be writing to our newspapers about this and health care reform as well.
If we don't speak, our voices will not be heard, and that rabid minority who lost
the last election will be the only ones holding the microphone.

11. It's "whose", not "who's" and you've mixed up the pottery rule with the dance rule.
And Bush was the protégé, not Atwater. :-)

19. OK, you got me on the first two,
but I plead writer's privilege on the last one. I paraphrased the Pottery Barn rule and made no mention of a dance, just substituted the word brought for the word break.

26. I'm going to give the General a pass on historical knowledge in recognition that he has
called out the right-wing idiots.

But on the other hand, maybe we should discourage Republicans with military credentials from saying the right things just because they don't say them the way we would have wanted them to.

Not.

30. The article I was responding to just happened to
use his remarks ... could have been anybody - like Colin Powell (I think my letter included him too.) Both Generals are black and should have a clue as to what is going on. And, no, their military service should not give anybody a pass. Look at Shinseki and all of the other Generals that called out Dick Cheney.

But again, the issue is the "Republican moderates" trying to weasel out of the relationship that they created by empowering these idiots.

32. It IS possible for someone to see the actions that are happening now for what they are
without having to give up all of one's previous political positions/stances. Especially in the case of general officers who are supposed to be loyal to the Commander-in-Chief and to be above the politics it is easy for me to imagine them being more pro-Republican.

Colin Powell, on the other hand, was a civilian holding his job as Sec of State.

Whatever the retired General's past political affiliations, if his stature as a former military officer helps to enlighten even a few wingnuts as to the perfidy that is going down in their name, I commend him and encourage him to give it all he's got.

There was a time when being a Republican and a conservative actually meant something besides being a knee-jerk fascist.
