He's the city comptroller who will face Republican nominee Michael Bloomberg in the general election. Hard to find any mention of it in the Times coverage... it's buried in the story re. the Manhattan DA primary. In fact, in the NYT story, Thompson is afforded 86 words for winning a contested primary and Bloomberg, who..... far as I know.... wasn't involved at all in today's primary election, having already purchased the GOP nomination... is allocated 96 words for doing essentially nothing..
I wonder which candidate the Times is supporting.
>>>>>As expected, Comptroller William C. Thompson Jr. handily defeated Councilman Tony Avella of Queens by a better than three-to-one ratio and will face Mr. Bloomberg in November.
In an uncharacteristically fiery speech Mr. Thompson declared: “After eight years of a mayor who has looked out for the rich and powerful, isn’t it time we had a mayor who looked out for the rest of us? It’s time for a change in New York. Eight years is enough.”
To which his supporters began chanting, “Eight is enough!”
For his part, Mr. Bloomberg, who is running as a Republican, could not resist the chance to thumb his nose at the Democrats, holding a rally on the West Side of Manhattan just as the polls closed.
And with the kind of ardor rarely seen during his usual City Hall events, he said: “People from every borough and every background are getting involved for a very simple reason: they care about the future of our city.”
“They know all of that could come to a screeching halt if we return to politics as usual,” he added.>>>>>>>
