NYC DEMS nominate Thompson for Mayor .
Edited on Wed Sep-16-09 02:59 AM by Smarmie Doofus
He's the city comptroller who will face Republican nominee Michael Bloomberg in the general election. Hard to find any mention of it in the Times coverage... it's buried in the story re. the Manhattan DA primary. In fact, in the NYT story, Thompson is afforded 86 words for winning a contested primary and Bloomberg, who..... far as I know.... wasn't involved at all in today's primary election, having already purchased the GOP nomination... is allocated 96 words for doing essentially nothing..

I wonder which candidate the Times is supporting.

>>>>>As expected, Comptroller William C. Thompson Jr. handily defeated Councilman Tony Avella of Queens by a better than three-to-one ratio and will face Mr. Bloomberg in November.
In an uncharacteristically fiery speech Mr. Thompson declared: “After eight years of a mayor who has looked out for the rich and powerful, isn’t it time we had a mayor who looked out for the rest of us? It’s time for a change in New York. Eight years is enough.”
To which his supporters began chanting, “Eight is enough!”

For his part, Mr. Bloomberg, who is running as a Republican, could not resist the chance to thumb his nose at the Democrats, holding a rally on the West Side of Manhattan just as the polls closed.

And with the kind of ardor rarely seen during his usual City Hall events, he said: “People from every borough and every background are getting involved for a very simple reason: they care about the future of our city.”

“They know all of that could come to a screeching halt if we return to politics as usual,” he added.>>>>>>>

1. Thompson is falling on his sword for the party.
The Republicans don't contest DA. We put up a nobody with no money for mayor.

Democracy. Sure.

2. On the plus side....
Edited on Wed Sep-16-09 06:30 AM by Smarmie Doofus
... three city council members who collaborated in the term-limits scam were upset by upstarts.... an almost unheard of occurrence in this political environment.

Also Christine Quinn , council speaker and chief DEM turncoat, barely squeaked by with 52% in her hard-rock liberal district where she normally cakewalks to victory.

Something's a-brewin'. It probably doean't extend much beyond the primary electorate. But that's a start.

Apropos of biased media coverage: the hard copy NY Times has an additional ( about 600 words, I'll guess)unpaid ad for Bloomberg disguised as a news story about Ed dept. hack Chris Cerf. Seems Cerf's joining the campaign in order to hilite the wonderful accomplishments that have been effected in the school system under Bloomberg.

Seems we're a "national model" of some kind.

Who knew.

6. I had a talk with some Quinn volunteers.
Explaining exactly why I wouldn't vote for her.

Nice to know others were as disgusted as I am.

Can't wait to cast my vote against him and FOR Thompson.

For comptroller -- I'm voting for John Liu in the runoff. He opposed Emperor Mike on the term limits.

4. I didn't realize that about Liu.
I skipped the comptroller race altogether 'cause they seemed like clones.

I'll give Liu a second look.

7. His big error seems to be claiming he worked in a sweatshop.
His mother did piecework at home. He helped.

8. Oh, I like Bloomberg. Just won't vote for him.
When he brags about 311, understand that only about 20 percent of 311 workers are city workers with benefits. The rest are privately contracted with no benefits.
