John Marcotte: California Man Introduces Amendment To Ban Divorce
John Marcotte, a writer who runs the site BadMouth.net, is collecting signatures to get the "California Protection of Marriage Act" on the ballot. If passed divorce would be illegal in California.

No, John is not a religious zealot (although he has 12 years of Catholic education), instead he's launched this initiative to mock the proponents of Proposition 8, which added "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California," to the state's constitution. He told CNN this Act is the the "logical extension of Proposition 8."

Marcotte's Website satirizes the traditional marriage campaigns with lines like:

  • You said "Til death do us part." You're not dead yet.

  • Jesus still loves you if you get divorced -- just not as much as before

  • John + Four and Kate + Four = Sin

  • Pat Robertson is my homeboy

Right, Mormons? Will the Latter Day Saints pour millions of dollars into California to support this initiative? Or are they a bunch of hypocrites, who hide behind religion to mask their deep-seated bigotry?

5. On such small things turn the tides of history -
Married to Wyman he would not have fallen under the influence of Nancy Davis and her Republican father. He'd have remained a Roosevelt Democrat and New Dealer, not run for president of SAG and gotten a taste for politics, had a couple half-way decent TV series in the 60s and 70s, then retired to his ranch.

No Reagan Revolution, Carter gets a 2nd term, followed by Kennedy/Hart in '84. No Gulf War. Universal healthcare in 1990. No emergence of the religious right. The Bushs remain relatively obscure in the behind the scenes machinations.

7. Why Stop There?
I say let's get on board and pass this initiative. If anything, it doesn't go far enough. People couldn't divorce in the Middle Ages when the Catholic Church was the only game in town. It was equivalent to heresy. So let's include the Medieval punishment for heresy as the penalty for attempting divorce. Try to divorce and get burned at the stake. In fact, let's legislate against heresy. Then we can revive the Office of the Holy Inquisition to take on these heretic sects like the fundies. As Cardinal Torquemada would say,

Religious tolerance is vastly overated.
