ANY COMMENTS ON THIS NEW RIGHT-WING CATCHPHRASE?
"Dissent is the highest form of racism."

This is going around the internet like mad right now. I'm disgusted, but haven't heard/read anyone else's take. The idea that people are defending their compatriots' prejudice by trying to co-opt the phrase "dissent is the highest form of patriotism" makes me nauseous.

14. Dissent is the highest form of patriotism
They are saying their patriotism is being labeled as racism unfairly.

Duh...

9. Exactly!
How can anyone with even a basic understanding of syntax think this means anything other than that? But it keeps popping up as something to say with pride.

11. Agreed...
...but it still seems a pretty racist statement to make your catchphrase. There's too many teabaggers who'll take this thing seriously, because they don't have the intelligence to "get" sarcasm.

13. It is more of the All or Nothing Absolutist mentality-- if some "dissent" is racist
Edited on Wed Sep-16-09 01:20 PM by Overseas
then it all must be racist.

I have even seen people here say-- "well, then are the others who disagree with President Obama all racists?" Of course not. Just the ones carrying racist signs and shouting racist slurs.

The absolutist crap is just a cheap rhetorical trick to equate vicious ugly racism with serious policy disagreement. Cheap ridiculous trick. But the Right is more concerned with diversion than with truth, as usual. They'll do what they need to to distract us from the ugly racism that their efforts to de-legitimize and smear our President have engendered.

The right also wants to be able to say that "see, some black people disagree with President Obama, too-- are you calling them racists?"

Well, of course not-- we're calling people who perform racist acts racists. There have been lots of those that could be discussed, so the Right uses whatever rhetoric it can have Fox news spew 100 times to see if it can divert attention from the ugly old attitudes that were stirred up this summer especially through professional bullying by right wing PR firms "supporting genuine grass roots groups" -- aka Astroturfing.

17. it is just stupid "SNARK" in reaction to Carter's claims. They are trying to ridicule the charge to
make it seem like there is no racism involved. Nobody has said all the protests etc are racist. They are taking things to extreme to make it seem ridiculous.

19. It doesn't make sense like most freeptard slogans.
It just puts two words that have nothing to do with each next to each other and mentally people start associating the words with each other. It's really a slick propaganda technique. It worked wonderfully to get people to believe that Iraq had something to do with 9-11.
