paved the way for Reagan's election.

Carter was left with the huge job of cleaning up after both Vietnam AND Watergate. It was too much for anyone to pull off in 4 years. Unfortunately, the policies begun in 1981 (and continuing to this day) have left our current President with a far bigger mess than the one Jimmy had. And he doesn't have the right people working on it, in most areas either, unfortunately.

Carter didn't give us easy answers. He gave us real answers, real solutions. Not easy answers.
Ray-gun gave us easy answers. Bush and Clinton gave us easy answers.
Jimmy Carter was the last decent man to be President (again, Obama excluded).

6. yea, he did lousy things like putting emphasis on human rights and negotiating israeli/egypt
peace treaty. camp david accords. dept. of energy. dept. of education.

i wasn't nearly as disappointed in President Carter

12. I was raising 6 kids at the time and remember the gas lines and the inflation.
Carter was so busy looking at the big international picture that he ignored the people that voted him in.

I was a lousy four years IMHO.

Look at the world that the corporatist have left us.
Is it really better?
I think that Carter gave us real solutions to complex problems.
Everyone since then (Obama excluded - too soon to condemn) has given us easy answers. Trickle down answers.
IMHO, of course. I am younger and do not know the ways of the world as much as you might know.

But I must add that I never felt left behind by Carter. I have always felt left behind - from 1980 on. ALWAYS.

WIN..Whip Inflation Now.. Carter inherited the mess and then came the Iran Hostage Crisis. Notice though because Carter didn't go all Rambo on those Iranians every hostage came home safely...I believe if a Republican had been in office at the time every one of them would have been killed plus about a million Iranians.

35. The President doesn't have a whole lot of control over those things
Reagan didn't wave a magic wand and make gas prices go down. OPEC collapsed because of the Iran/Iraq war. And inflation was brought down mostly because of Paul Volker, who was appointed by Carter.

If we'd only paid attention to just his energy policies.

Carter said we needed to conserve energy and learn austerity. Reagan ran against him by saying, "no we don't, let's party".

Reagan had the solar panels Carter put on the White House removed. So. Who was correct?

14. I remember his term well too--he accomplished a lot and was ahead of his time
especially on energy policy. If we had followed his lead we would be much better off as a nation today. But he didn't handle the political part of being president well. That hurt him.

...and I was even a Reagan Democrat due to my entering college at the time and I was worried about the economy. However, that was the worst vote of my life and I've never voted for a Republican since. I've also matured enough to realize that blaming Carter for the state of the nation at that point in history is incorrect and would require me to not have matured since 1980. I'm surprised that you haven't re-examined your misperceptions about Carter. Listen to "Our Endangered Values" on tape - narrated by Jimmy himself, then see if you feel the same way.

my general feeling of malaise re the planet under Bush, but I was very familiar with Carter's speech re the Crisis of Confidence.

The Wingnuts called that the Malaise speech but it was one of the great speeches of all time - if only people had taken him seriously re both the oil crisis and the crisis...

18. No one will ever say that Carter didn't speak the truth about
South Africa, Israel, George Bush or racism. What I love most about Carter is that he is fearless. He should be taken way more seriously but the corporate hacks refuse to have a discussion on anything that condemns their modus operandi. So they attempt to ridicule him. Fuck them.

History will be very kind to Carter and the same is not true for the tools at M$Greedia.

and I may have been a teenager, but I well remember my relief when Jimmy Carter became Governor after that laughingstock Lester Maddox. He brought honor back to the office.

President Carter is one of my heroes.

were a result of Nixon's horrible economic policies. Carter had to try to clean up after Nixon's massive inflation of the money supply and delinking of the dollar-gold peg.
