In honor of Patriots' Day, April, 1775...It led to this:

Action of Second Continental Congress, July 4, 1776

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America

"...We hold these truths to be self evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness - That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed..."

At the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin was asked, "What have you wrought?"
He answered, "...a Republic, if you can keep it."

1. follow up re: Patriots' Day.

Patriots' Day (sometimes spelled Patriot's Day or Patriots Day) is a civic holiday in the U.S. states of Massachusetts and Maine (once part of Massachusetts), and a public school observance day in Wisconsin. Traditionally it was observed on April 19, in honor of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War, fought on that date in 1775. Since 1969, however, the holiday has been observed on the third Monday in April, providing a three-day long weekend. Observances and re-enactments of these first battles of the American Revolution occur annually at Lexington Green and Minute Man National Historic Park.
