QUIZ ! who wrote or said the following words....
“Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration.”

"The legitimate object of government is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but cannot do for themselves in their separate and individual capacities."

"Inasmuch as good things are produced by labor, it follows that all such things of right belong to those whose labor has produced them. But it has so happened, in all ages of the world, that some have labored and others have without labor enjoyed a large proportion of the fruits. This is wrong and should not continue. To secure to each laborer the whole product of his labor, or as nearly as possible, is a worthy object of any good government. It seems strange that any man would dare to ask a just God's assistance in wringing bread from the sweat of other men's faces."

As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed.

10. Not even that,
America's shallowness has reached such a low point, A. Lincoln would not be elected today simply because of his "looks." Look at Kucinich. Sure, you can argue that people won't vote for him because he is too lefty. But the reality for many others is pretty simple; "he looks like a troll," or something to that effect. No, instead, we prefer a nice, tall statuesque president pretty much always than not, because they are more likely to bring change, er..or hope..hm..well, they're still going to be tall and statuesque, and if that doesn't say presidential...:sarcasm:

9. The more things change the more they stay the same
As well as time. Those words are as true today, maybe truer than the day they were first spoken. It is a small miracle I suppose, that the corporations that are accumulating the worlds (and labor's) wealth didn't do it even more back then. But I'm guessing that without the "Mighty Wurlitzer" of right wing propoganda A.K.A. the "Main Stream Media" that is in place today, the good people of yesteryear weren't quite so gullible (read stupid) as they are today, and knew, when they were being fed a shit sandwich, could actually tell it was a shit sandwich. Very much unlike today.

11. FWIW, the last paragraph of that quote is bogus. it's been discussed here
before. what he did say is here, from his first inaugural speech, with debunking links:

http://www.tinyrevolution.com/mt/archives/001551.html

It continues to develop that the insurrection is largely, if not exclusively, a war upon the first principle of popular government–the rights of the people…

In my present position I could scarcely be justified were I to omit raising a warning voice against this approach of returning despotism.

It is not needed nor fitting here that a general argument should be made in favor of popular institutions, but there is one point to which I ask a brief attention. It is the effort to place capital on an equal footing with, if not above, labor in the structure of government…

Labor is prior to and independent of capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration…

No men living are more worthy to be trusted than those who toil up from poverty…Let them beware of surrendering a political power which they already possess, and which if surrendered will surely be used to close the door of advancement against such as they and to fix new disabilities and burdens upon them till all of liberty shall be lost.

.............

the bogus part:

I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed.

as the link shows, it was part of huge lying hack Andrew Ferguson's attack on Al Gore's Age of Reason in a stinker of a piece in the Washington Post

13. well Snopes has a somewhat different opinion, even ifthe quote is bogus
Snopes considers the "corporations have been enthroned" section to be spurious; apparently, it never saw print until 1896. But...

15. I meant to say the thrust of Lincoln's comments are obviously in character
with the bogus quotes, which were used by Ferguson to impeach Gore's 'un-noted' book.

the snopes link is cited in the article I put up, btw

sometimes I don't have anything better to do. I remembered this being a point of contention back when the Lincoln quotes came up at several different junctures

that said, wouldn't it be swell to have one single republican of today's pigswill party that came even close to the stature of their original standard bearer?
