"California Soda Survey Gives Weight To Health Concerns"...
Posted without comment.

http://www.sacbee.com/topstories/story/2188612.html

A sweeping statewide study released today points to soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages as one of the main reasons why we are fat.

"For the first time, we have strong scientific evidence that soda is one of the – if not the largest – contributors to the obesity epidemic," Dr. Harold Goldstein, executive director of the California Center for Public Health Advocacy, said Wednesday.

Obesity costs California $41 billion a year, an earlier report from the same organization found.

Suspicion of a link between soda and obesity isn't fresh news, but authors said the study is unprecedented in its scope.

"Bubbling Over: Soda Consumption and Its Link to Obesity in California" – a joint effort by the California Center for Public Health Advocacy and the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research – interviewed 42,000 Californians of all ages.

The study found that 24 percent of adults drink one or more non-diet sodas a day, and these adults are 27 percent more likely to be overweight.

The results for children were worse, researchers said. Sixty-two percent of adolescents ages 12 to 17 and 41 percent of children ages 2 to 11 imbibe at least one sugar-sweetened drink a day.

These kids, Goldstein said, will end up costing the state in future health care bills.

"This could be the first generation in modern history that will have a shorter life expectancy than their parents," he said.

1. Short of making soda illegal they should put very high taxes
Edited on Thu Sep-17-09 08:19 PM by virgogal
on it.

In Mass.cigarettes are taxed about 40% (including federal). Smoking rates are way down.

That strategy would solve the soda problem quickly.

7. Is smoking really down?
We live in a nation where people can easily cross into neighboring states. Not to mention the internet. It might be illegal to order them from the internet, but it doesn't mean people won't do it.

28. Tax non-diet sodas.
Diet sodas are not the best thing for people to drink; but they don't directly cause obesity.

8. Really. How reactionary of you.
You do realize, don't you, that the state is us? There has got to be a way to pay for the outcome of our vices. We've got this study here that shows that children & adults are suffering ill health effects from a massively advertised, well-subsidized, and easily available product. What devices do we have to mitigate the costs of this burden that is bore by everyone?

39. Personal choice?
You are going to tell me that children, who are most vulnerable to billions of dollars of brain-washing from the food industry, will grow up cognizant that they have a choice? Hahahahahaha!!!! And have you shopped at a grocery store lately? Choice is pretty much owned by 3 companies and and their is about 25 variations of the same choice available from any product.

But sure, I'll grant you "teach nutrition" if you will advocate that the government has a dollar for dollar match to counteract the advertising industry. Go ahead. Tell me now that you think the government should spend billions of dollars a year "teaching nutrition."

By the way, I suppose you think that people should be allowed to eat lead, breath asbestos, & have watches illuminated by radium dials. Just some examples of how the government interfered with personal choice.

3. I went cold turkey
from around a case of (diet) soda per day, to nothing but water.

Since January 26, 2008.

Soda is just the shark's fin pointing out of the water. The whole "food for (corporate) profit" scheme is going to kill us, regardless of what we try to do about it.

34. I did too
I was going through at least 4 cases of diet soda a week. I went cold turkey at Thanksgiving 2006. Every now and then I have a craving for soda (usually when I'm around my parents who drink way too much soda) and one sip of theirs satisfies it.

6. Even when I was a kid... when soda was a rare treat
I couldn't understand the appeal. On a hot summer's day, it always made me more thirsty.

And I can't comprehend how and 8oz soda went from something people drank occasionally to daily huge 32oz servings.

9. Imagine you are a PepsiCo exec.
Your job is to increase sales. Do you job you get to keep it. Do it spectacularly you get a bonus. Fail at it and you are fired.

Also you live in a society where pretty much everything you think you want has a price tag (in dollars) on it.

Now, are you especially ethically concerned about addictive stuff (like caffeine) in your product? Are you ethically concerned over research that shows consumers consume more if you do nothing other than give them larger portions?

Or are you going to just shut up and do your job?

14. And it's not just recently that this has happened
I read a very interesting book a couple of years ago, called "A History of the World in Six Glasses". It was about how six beverages (beer, wine, distilled spirits, tea, coffee, and Coca-Cola) changed the history of the world.

What really struck me was a quote from Roberto Goizueta, the CEO of Coca-Cola, I was able to find it again:

"A billion hours ago, human life appeared on Earth. A billion minutes ago, Christianity emerged. A billion seconds ago, the Beatles performed on The Ed Sullivan Show. A billion Coca-Colas ago was yesterday morning."

Since he died in 1997, it had to be uttered before then. Right now, the Coca-Cola company is up to a billion and a half servings per day.

12. Caution: Diet soda isn't any better
My husband is diabetic and over time developed neurological problems: migraines, vertigo, Parkinson-like tremors. It took telling him about Donald Rumsfeld pushing aspartame through the FDA (on the day following Reagan's inauguration) to convince him to give up Diet Coke. All neurological symptoms disappeared in about a week's time, plus we discovered that aspartame brings on sugar cravings and interferes with insulin therapy - great for a diabetic (not!). Even as a diabetic, he now refuses to touch the stuff and reads the packaging on all products to make sure they don't contain the poison. Aspartame has also been found to lessen serotonin levels, which can cause depression. Aspartame/Nutrasweet is a killer. What else would you expect from Rummy?

The really scary part is that aspartame is put in many products without being labeled as such, under "natural and other ingredients". Trust me, it's unnatural so must be "other".

So I figured a bunch of diet-slurpers would jump on anyone saying diet was bad.

20. Our own study was enough for me
The web is filled with aspartame scare stories, but seeing my husband's health improve so quickly and dramatically is enough for us. Add Rummy's involvement and you know that human suffering to line his pockets is a given.

is to buy no food that has been touched by large corporations (not counting family farm corporations).

I shop mainly at local farmers' markets.

lost it and kept it off for about 12 years. Of course I also exercised, drank less soda, changed my eating habits...

It's not that surprising overweight people drink diet drinks.

31. And not coincidentally, the timeline of the obesity explosion in this country
runs parallel to the addition of MonSatan's mutant corn poison to the food supply. I won't touch the shit anymore. I'm a recovering Coke addict, but not the powdered kind, nor the rock kind. Still enjoy the occasional sugar sweetened Mexican Coke now and then, but would never go back to drinking it like I used to, even if they did go back to sugar. (Though the temporary return of real Mountain Dew & Pepsi earlier this summer was a welcome sight. And from a former Coke loyalist, that's a high compliment)

24. Well, like I always say Fuck freedom
As a society we need to find out who is doing what and how it harms them (and therefore us) and tax it or ban it.

Who the hell is pro-freedom anyway?

26. Yes they do
give em time - you think these studies are for fun?

They set up an agenda and then gather data for it.

There are people who want to ban/punish/etc people who are not like them and making choices they don't.Some call them sinners, others use different names - the result is the same.

Punishing behavior you do not approve of.

35. Yes, sadly, they do. Like with home schoolers
Find the bad ones and do a Glenn Beck on them. All the while the many other folks who do a good job get ignored. And one can do the same in reverse on home school message boards, find a ton of things wrong with public schools and use that as a reason to not have kids go to public schools.

what happened with people saying, glad your choices are working for you.

37. So true my friend, and while we main not always agree on issues
I think we generally do agree on things like the tactics used by people.

I know a ton of kids who are homeschooled, and who are also fundies. And not a one of them I know are racist (my brother in law voted for Obama, and he is a fundie and my sister teaches creationism) - but because some fundies are and some do really stupid things they all get labeled.

Just because someone had a bad set of experiences with a group does not mean the whole group is the same. But I guess it is easier for some folks to blame all and go on a witch hunt, ala Glenn Beck (whom I think is secretly their hero), than to judge based on individual actions.

38. What utter crap.
Another BMI based "study" oh goody. Nice thing is that with kids, the CDC has this whole "growth chart BMI" thing which is an even bigger pile of horseshit than the adult BMI.

Then, THEN the study talks about the question "how many soda/sweetened drinks do you have a day?" Well, what the fuck does that mean? Are we talking total number of drinks or ounces and calories per ounce? Oooh, see that's where it hurts. That's like basing obesity on the question "how many meals did you have today?"

Shit data, shit study.

And so nobody thinks I'm defending soda or anything else, since I'm not, soda/sweetened drinks are all shit. Empty calories and chemicals.
