Obama isn't pushing the public option ... "The public option is dead."
All of which raises the question: If so many people hate this legislation, why not rip up the bill and start anew? Democrats will try in the coming weeks, as it moves through committee and to the Senate floor. They'll undoubtedly find a way to increase subsidies to help working families and protect the middle class against a tax increase. But the tinkering can only go so far, because for all of its shortcomings, Baucus' bill is also what Senate Democrats are calling "the White House bill."

Perhaps some of the fire aimed at Baucus should be redirected at the president. The legislation accomplishes much of what Obama laid out in his speech before the joint session of Congress earlier this month. The bill is not only deficit-neutral, according to the Congressional Budget Office, but it also shrinks long-term health care costs. Both are key Obama pledges. The legislation also includes insurance reforms, expands coverage, and has http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/09/16/AR2009091603518.html?hpid=topnews">not upset the careful coalition of industry groups the White House worked so hard to align at the start of this process.

It also moves a stalled process forward, which also delights White House aides anxious to make a deal and move on. Now that all the pieces of legislation are on the table, the president can start building support for a final piece of legislation. Or, to put it more coarsely, he can start buying votes. In recent private meetings with senators, the president has been selling the Baucus bill. No, the bill doesn't include the public option, which Obama has advocated in public. But in private meetings, Obama isn't pushing the public option, according to Senate Democratic aides. "The public option is dead," said one. Instead, the president is emphasizing other fixes in the legislation.

I know people gripe about "unnamed sources" and "low-level aides," but at some point the evidence starts to get overwhelming that the White House is happy to let the public option die.

I'll vote for ABO (anyone but obama). Can't reward stupidity if he goes there and throws the public option under the bus. What is this man thinking? Has he lost his damn mind?

on edit: I suppose the proof will be in the House pudding.

edited for civility.

Seriously, Obama still isn't leading on this issue. This senate version should never have been crafted. Obama does NOT get health care.

Even on CNN this morning there was an article about two women dying for lack of insurance. HOW FUCKING STUPID ARE WE. You don't die from lack of insurance. They died from lack of being rich enough to pay cash. It makes the same amount of sense.

Realistically, they died from lack of access to healthcare. If we can stay focused on that instead of mandatory insurance, I'll start to have faith in your deity-cum-president. Until then, color me agnostic.

5. It doesn;t matter is 'some' are calling the Baucus bill the WH bill.
It isn't out of committee yet. It has no support from the repukes and little support from the Dems. If it does committee it will be added to the other Senate versions. The House bill WILL have PO in it. Conference will reconcile the bills. The 'White House' bill is the one Congress sends them.

7. And Ben Nelson says that the health care debate is a marathon
not a sprint.

I read this to mean we will get no legislation at all for a long time. So blather and foam, piss and moan, I'm done with rumors. I'll wait for a bill, then I'll make a judgment and take appropriate action. Until then.

whatever

9. Health care reform isn't the only thing Obama wants to get done.
If he allows a bill to pass without a public option, he will lose a lot of his support. He knows this. This will set a bad precedent going forward for the remainder of his term, and he will not have the strong public support he now has. This will make it more difficult for him to accomplish other things.

I don't think Obama is willing to let go of so much support during the first year of his presidency. Plus, the Baucus bill requires EVERYONE to get insurance. People will be struggling with high premiums and additional costs due to this bill which will be in place for the next few election cycles. Dems will lose seats big time, and they know this as well.

There is overwhelming support for a public option among the American people. I don't believe that Obama or the Dems in Congress are willing to sacrifice such a big chunk of their support because of this.

If this piece of crap passes, that is IT from me as far as support for Obama or the Dems, and lots of others feel the same way. I don't think they're willing to risk that just yet.

15. If you were honest though you'd admit that any number of wildly different bills
could be what Obama outlined. The how is at least as important as the what.

16. Okay, riddle me this ...
Every day this week, everyday, President Obama has vehemently reiterated that the health care bill must have the public option. These words came from his lips, shaped by his teeth and tongue. He has even said that he won't sign a bill that doesn't have a pub op.

He started the week on 60 Minutes telling Steve Kroft that he and a chief aide had agreed when he took on the health care reform fight that before he actually signed the bill folk would have said it was dead at least 5 times. Apparently, they weren't lying, as evidenced by this and other off-the-rails diaries all over the web.

This diary is just a whole bunch of craziness and nonsense. Get a grip.

20. Well, it's beyond dispute
There are certain elements who would like the public option to be dead. Oddly, they're very reticent about having their names attached to that sentiment. But there seems to be no shortage of "journalists" who will provide anonymity for "White House aides" or "one" Senate Democratic aide. Which is pretty slipshod work, since there's no state secret being betrayed, and protecting a source by granting anonymity in this fashion makes it impossible to evaluate the statements.

And then the folks who post such stuff and nonsense and cite it as "evidence" take it to a whole new realm.
