My email to my Senators regarding ACORN.
Edited on Fri Sep-18-09 07:49 PM by Eric J in MN

Subject: Give ACORN a chance to testify

Slow down with regard to ACORN.

Give ACORN representatives a chance to explain what they're doing about the scandal before blocking all federal funds.

ACORN helps the poor. Defunding their work shouldn't be rushed into.

Feel free to use my words in writing your Senators.

1. Well said! How about defunding Blackwater and Halliburton instead?

2. You mean companies with policies which cost lives...
...instead of a non-profit where a few workers got scammed?

3. I'd love to get the backstory of who funded the documentary. And how many acorn
workers they had to go through to find the bad apples.

4. Members of Congress are also vulnerable to scams with hidden cameras...

...but Congress didn't vote to end its own funding after Abscam.

5. Update: one of the fired ACORN wokers called the police after talking to the scammers.

San Diego:

O'Keefe is heard in the video saying, "I want to buy a house and this is my girlfriend, and she's a prostitute."

(Juan Carlos) Vera said he was told the woman needed to escape her controlling pimp, who wouldn't let her start a new life.

Immediately, Vera said he offered to call the police but the filmmaker quickly stopped him.

"Don't call the police because I'm gonna be a lawyer," O'Keefe said in the video.

After the pair left the building, Vera said he called the National City Police Department.

National City police confirmed that Vera contacted them, but said there was not enough information about the couple to file a formal report.

6. I wish ACORN had investigated for a couple of weeks before...
...deciding whether to fire workers in the scammers' videos.

Then the big question would have been: Should ACORN fire them?
instead of: Should ACORN lose all federal funding?

Also, some people would have waited until after the investigation to judge, and ACORN could have announced before public opinion had settled that some workers phoned the police, including Juan Carlos Vera and Katherine Conway Russell.
