1. I think a lot of people have said that, for a long time.

4. George Will said we should pull out the troops
But I think that was just because he wants to carpet bomb the place.

5. There was this great guy named Alexander, more than a few weeks back, who . . .
wrote to his mother about his encounters with the western and northern tribes of Afghans:

"I am involved in the land of a 'Leonine' (lion-like) and brave people, where every foot of the ground is like a wall of steel, confronting my soldier. You have brought only one son into the world, but everyone in this land can be called an Alexander.”

He went on to describe how local resistance and the harsh terrain made it difficult for his forces to subdue the region. And in the time since his attempt, many others have found the mountainous terrain there similar to a maze that traps outside invaders.

Easy to get into, impossible to subdue, costly to leave.

7. You may be thinking of Secretary of Defense Gates who gave a very
thoughtful interview and said that. He went on to say that additional troops were needed in the short term to allow the government to establish a presence throughout the country.

12. Yes, I think that's it. It was someone of his stature...someone who, saying something like that...
would really make people sit up and listen.

8. Recently? Hard to say, it is an axiom.
Every significant military leader and historian for a start. "Where empires go to die" has been around for centuries.

It's about the most worthless real estate on the planet, except for it's occasionally strategic location. There's nothing there to fight for and the terrain is nearly impassable, it is a gigantic pile of rocks with some of the world's most insane people scratching out sustenance from them.

The very idea that this is a "good war" is so blatantly idiotic on it's face that it turns it's defenders into objects of ridicule. The fact that two administrations have tried to sell this to the sheeple is either testimony to the arrogant scornfulness of the rulers for their followers or the monumental stupidity of the latter.

10. I think it was The Daily Show.
Wasn't it? A pithy list of the top conquerors who could conquer every damn thing but NOT Afghanistan?

We need to leave. We need to leave now. It is the stupidest place to be.

Why are we for ever in wars? Could it be that big business likes wars?
