Joe Biden Goes To Baghdad To Hustle CONTRACTS FOR BIG OIL
Biden hustles terms on Iraq oil contracts

Published: Sept. 18, 2009 at 3:11 PM

BAGHDAD, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's visit to Baghdad earlier this week -- his third this year -- came hot on the heels of a lightning visit by Russia's energy minister as the scramble for Iraq's oil riches heats up. Just as Sergei Shmatko sought favorable terms for Russian companies in an upcoming oil contract auction, Biden was hustling on behalf of the U.S. oil giants who have long dreamed of getting their hands on what may be the largest untapped oil reserves in the world.

Biden urged Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to resist the temptation to demand hefty payments from the international oil companies as the price for doing business with the new Iraq when a new auction of contracts is held in Baghdad in December.

There is speculation that this time around the oil companies will demand higher fees to compensate for the worsening security situation, a crisis that is likely to worsen as U.S. forces continue their withdrawal.

Biden stressed that the Iraqis must make their terms more attractive to foreign investors if they are to amass the $50 billion they say they need to upgrade their long-neglected energy industry and boost production to provide the revenue required for reconstruction.

Another major problem is the government's failure to produce an oil law that would regulate foreign participation in Iraq's oil industry.

1. Guess
some UNREC'er feels the colonial powers deserve that oil and the continuation of pro BIG OIL policies is a good thing?

2. Can we afford to let the Russians control it?
I detest what's been done, but it's up to this Administration to do the difficult and extensive job of damage control.

4. Who is we?

Are you a major stock holder in Big Oil? Cause that's the 'we', not the working people in this country. The interests of the rich are antithetical to those of working people. It ain't 'damage control', it's hustling for The Man.

5. The "we" I'm referring to are the "we" who buy gas, food and other goods.
"We" can't afford for oil to go over $80 per barrel again. At least not for any extended period of time.

8. Well, "we" should have thought of that before destabilizing the frackin' world.

10. No matter the case
of how "we" might suffer are "you" in favor of this illegal occupation and mass slaughter unconditionally or do you favor it if "you" would have some gain from it? Are you suggesting that "our" ease of life should come at the expense of others?

Are you suggesting that this occupation and theft of other people's resources is to be accepted so as to alleviate the potential difficulties of the people who reside in the Empire?

Now don't you think it is "our" obligation to stand in solidarity with the Iraqi people and as part of that we are to reject any form of occupation and we should, instead of supporting such blatantly criminal acts perpetrated by our government, be standing up to this government and illegal occupation (show me one "legal" occupation) and protesting/resisting all criminal efforts by such government.

Pretty simple. It's their oil not ours. If I have become dependent on food, as I have taken over your garden by force, you have grown is it okay for me to keep stealing from you? Ultimately your position is one that defends the slave master. Think about it.

15. How did "we" go from defending Joe Biden's negotiating on our behalf for access to oil...
to "my" being in favor of the illegal invasion and ongoing occupation of Iraq? Gold medals all around for those leaping to conclusions and presuming to know the minds of others. Bravo! Oh, and pick up the phone, Dione Warwick has a job offer.

Y'all are way too confrontational. Save it for the Republics.

18. Again
who's "our"?

If you think Joe Biden has ever or is now advocating for the people you have not looked into his political career too deeply.

Again are you in favor of this illegal occupation?

Leave nothing to question and answer the question. It's easy.

14. If you hate oil so much, here's an idea: Stop using ANYTHING that requires oil...
No more car.
No more plastic.
Food. (petrochemical fertilizers, never mind storage, never mind transport of it...)

No more lots of things.

16. Not the point

The point is who controls the oil, how it is obtained.

Do you think that oil can only be obtained from capitalist parasites?

6. Can you afford to live in a fantasy world?
The Iraqis should control it, and ultimately they will: in alliance with their partner in... Iran.

Can "we" afford to pretend "we" can control it? Because that delusion has already cost "us" a great deal, and will ultimately bankrupt "us."
