Westchester Man Busted With Massive Weapons Cache - Got another one

Police: Gary Burstell, 52, Had An Assortment Guns, Ammo And Explosives Inside Cortlandt Manor Home

Sep 18, 2009 8:42 pm US/Eastern

By JOSH LANDIS, CBS 2 HD News
CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. (CBS)
AP

Law enforcement agents "smoked out" an arsenal of weapons while investigating an alleged cigarette selling ring.

CBS 2 HD has learned details on a raid which turned into a different kind of lucky strike.

Police said guns and ammo -- more than 1,000 rounds of it -- and a stash of explosives made Gary Burstell a potentially dangerous man.

"It's exceedingly troubling when we come across a cache of weapons and explosive devices such as this," Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore said.

Officers raided his home, confiscating weapons, fireworks and improvised explosive devices. Burstell was charged with criminal possession of a weapon. His neighbors were in shock.

"(He's a) wonderful neighbor, honest to God," John Meyers said.

6. Everybody needs a hobby
IED could cover a wide range of devices. A beer can with a couple of firecrackers in it would fit the description.

9. A lawyer for Burstell said the "explosives" were in fact devices to smoke animals out of burrows.

21. The article states...

that the "explosives" were anti-gopher smoke bombs, rather than EFPs.

ooops got beat.

2. Looks like a bum rap.
The "weapons cache" is some hunting rifles and shotguns (see the video). From what I saw it is hardly huge. A thousand rounds of ammo is really not that much if you target shoot much at all. They didn't say what kind of explosive devices he had, and they could get him justifiably locked up, but the quality of journalism in this item is pretty bad.

I'm not sure whether Westchester county is considered the same as NYC in terms of firearms law, but I kind of doubt it.

It looks like they thought they had a hot tip and kicked in the guy's door for no good reason and they're trying to make it stick.

3. All i can tell you is that there is no hunting with guns here. Only bow and arrow.
Edited on Sat Sep-19-09 11:26 AM by OmmmSweetOmmm
That doesn't mean that he doesn't hunt in counties north of Westchester.

4. 1000 rounds isn't that much. $50 gets you 1000 rounds of .22 target ammo.

19. And $30 will get you 1000 rds of cheap hunting/plinking ammo
I should know, I spent $200 stocking up on it last year when it was on sale for $10/500 rds :)

8. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
So he wasn't involved with the illegal sale of cigarettes being investigated.

The arsenal of weapons seized were normal and legal hunting weapons of various calibers. 1000 rounds of ammo would not be an unreasonable amount to have on hand for various calibers. Look at the video, none of the weapons fit the nebulous category of assault weapon.

The IED's apparently are smoke bombs to flush out burrowing animals. Have you ever had gopher problems? Seems he was using a fairly humane method to solve a troublesome problem(my guess based on his attorneys statement).

Yep, there is a potentially dangerous man alright and that PD and DA has just given the foaming at the mouth "see, they ARE after our guns" group something they can use for a long time. I think the matter could have been handled differently. Perhaps a bit more low key, unless something damaging was actually found. Then bring in the news media.

I wonder how that station would report if they got a look inside my gun safe?

:grr:

10. They look like mostly shotguns to me
I have that many guns and more than amount of ammo..

Come to think of it I have a pack of smoke bombs to kill the moles that are eating my whole yard as well that I bought at the feed store last time I went in for dog food... I haven't decided whether I really want to exterminate them yet.

AAck! I must be a dangerous dangerous man!

Never underestimate the stupidity of cops... I hope he sues em and makes a handsome retirement.

11. That station would go into vapor lock if they saw mine
Along with at least 10,000 rounds of ammo. The only reason I have that much I order in 1000 round lots and have been working to much to get out and burn it off at the range. There is no law in the country as far as I know of that limits how much legal ammo you can own.

12. Vapor lock! some of my handguns would cause seizures
The T/C Contender & barrels would probably just confuse them.

The vintage Remington XP-100 bolt-action handgun, definite seizure.

The rotary breech Magnum Research Lone Eagle chambered for .308, grand mal for certain.

16. When I returned from Germany
I shipped 62 guns back to the states. An old AirForce buddy of mine shipped 200+ guns back. An Army special forces MSgt I knew shipped over 500 guns including two 20mm canons. All of these shipments were approved by the ATF. The ATF actually sent a agent when the Army guy had his household goods packup to make sure he was in full compliance.

15. So, the police invested time and money investigating someone NOT involved in a cigarette ring
Edited on Sat Sep-19-09 01:01 PM by NickB79
And in order to cover their asses, threw a few fake charges at the guy by claiming smoke bombs to kill burrowing animals in the yard are really IED's.

17. Massive Weapons Cache?
One antique unloaded handgun, three shotguns, and 14 rifles. That isn't a massive cache. This story is being hyped. I hope this blows up in the face of that DA.

1,000 rounds isn't very much specially with the ammo shortage. Glad I don't live there.

23. Another article says that he was trying to buy silencers.
http://www.lohud.com/article/2009909190341

Burstell's arrest this week came as an offshoot of a separate cigarette tax-evasion case, during which Burstell approached undercover officers and "advised them that he was looking to negotiate the purchase of silencers for guns he had," Curti said in court.

Curti said that Burstell then arranged to provide homemade bombs in exchange.

On Sept. 10, Curti said Burstell did just that, and turned an alleged explosive device over to the undercover investigators. The device was then handed over to the Westchester County Bomb Squad and detonated.

Bad reporting and those dip-shit police officers are attempting to make mountains out of mole hills.

This man was no threat. What did you mean by "got another one" Did you read about what was confiscated?
