There will be an interim replacement from Mass. in the Senate

The legislation to allow the appointment of an interim Senator from Massachusetts until the January 19, 2010 special election cleared a big hurdle today:

The state Senate passed a bill this afternoon that would allow Governor Deval Patrick to name an interim successor to Edward M. Kennedy, potentially paving the way for appointment of a new US senator later this week.

The Senate approved the measure by a 24-16 vote, leaving one final procedural hurdle in both chambers before the bill heads to Patrick's desk. The House and Senate are expected to enact the bill on Wednesday, a formality unlikely to derail the effort.

1. This should be federally mandated.
open the polls for 3 weeks with volunteers just like early voting. wouldn't cost the states much.

Aren't there like 4 Republicans in the MA State Senate? Why did so many "Democrats" vote against doing the right thing? It's too bad it's so much easier to expel people from parties here in Canada, because these people are not Dems.

3. Perhaps they thought "the right thing" was the change they made in
2004, so they voted against this "new right thing."

4. Nope...
The right thing is for the new Senator to be of the same party as his predecessor and to be approved by the State Assembly and State Senate.

Either way, they were right to not give that choice to Mormon Mitt because he would have made a choice that the democratic will of the MA electorate could never have produced.
