"Reid aides tell me that throughout the summer, he was on literally hundreds of calls with Rahm Emanuel and Max Baucus, discussing ways to push forward past one obstacle after another.

I couldn�t determine what logjams Reid or Rahm broke. But the volume of calls is still interesting, suggesting Reid and Rahm both took the wheel on this far more firmly than previously thought, for better or worse."

1. While it is very upsetting to contemplate,

the fact is that Pres. Obama and Emanuel could have cut a deal with big insurance and big pharma. It is still a viable proposition that Obama has been publicly very supportive of a public option KNOWING that he would never have a bill with workable public option reach his desk for signature. It is by no means a a sure thing, but it IS still possible and it does explain the odd trajectory of the healthcare bill since Obama took office.
