I just unsubbed from the Whitehouse newsletter and gave the reason as my disappointment with the
president's refusal to push for something better than a give-away to insurance companies. I did this over the last week from 3 of the 4 email addresses at which I was receiving them. I had merely intended to unsub, as I am concentrating all my political email into a designated account, but when they asked for my reason, I thought it was just one more place to maybe get a progressive voice heard.

11. So what have you done to make anything better?
You snark a lot. Does that make you special? You tote the largest collection of pom poms on the board. Doest that make you special?

I think he has a good idea. If a couple of thousand of us did the same thing, there is no way the message would be lost. Obama is my president. I helped get him hired. I think that was worship enough. Now, if he isn't going to do the job I hired him for, I think he should hear about it. You keep on with the big old kisses and hugs. I'm sure that will get him to change.

13. Apparently snark's a good way to rack up more than 117,000 posts in just five years.
It's probably hard to manage much in the way of substance when one must throw up nearly 2,000 posts a month, sick or well, rain or shine.

5. In fact, it's been widely reported that pressure from the left has had the effect of strengthening
the resolve of many democrats and the president to stand firm against repuke gutting of the bill.

I'll bet if enough people unsubdued and gave a reason that we are disappointed with the seeming willingness of the Prez and the Dams to give in to Republican and Blue dog pressure to gut the bill, it would be noted.

One can always resub.

If you are protesting because of the Baucus Bill, that hunk of junk will never move on as is.

There are 4 or 5 bills floating around. It is still being negotiated. Harkin is pretty confident the final bill will be close to Kennedy's bill. There is a thread on that out in GD.

7. It has been widely reported that mounting pressure from the left has been influential in what the
the White House and the hill see as viable. Unsubbing from the newsletter is, obviously, a small gesture, but one that would not fail to be recognized if enough lefties did it.

19. What a coincidence
I just got home from making phone calls at my local Democratic Party/OFA headquarters asking people where they stood on health care; asking them to call their reps and the WH and demand real health care reform, and to speak out if they support a public option and are pissed about give-aways to the health insurance industry; asking them if they had questions about the health care reform sausage mill we're witnessing; and asking whether they are interested in volunteering locally, since we have important midterm elections coming up next year.

Maybe it's just me, but, seemed the productive thing for me to do.

22. Thanks! I hope you were able to stir up some action. I've never written and called my
congress critters more than I have over the past few months. I often do wonder if it makes a difference. We don't have money to give now (though we did to Obama), so I try to believe that every little bit helps.

We hadn't ever been involved in politics in the past, but my husband and I volunteered locally. We haven't been contacted since the election, and have been overwhelmed with extended family obligations, so haven't checked in, either. Hopefully we'll become available by the time they are ready for us.

27. Slowly, but surely people are starting to want to get back involved, it seems
The holidays are coming, so less people will stay involved, probably.

And I, too, wonder whether all the calls and declarations with signatures that are sent to our congress critters matter. I get frustrated, because I feel like we're spinning our wheels. A lot of people are confused about the health care/insurance stuff. Many express that it's not going the way they had envisioned - that they want public option and not these crap bills.

Last night, I discovered another astroturf group who's fighting health care reform - they've got some doctors involved - I posted about it. Come to find out, the group backing them have mailed over 1 million signatures to congress. We have a lot of opposition - and they are out there in force, fighting against us by making their voices heard. So I guess, I need to try to help get our voice heard. :hi:

39. In the past, the truly big and important bills - IWR, the Bailouts, etc -
Get suddenly propelled through Congress in a "Here's the 1,000 page bill and it's an emergency so don't bother reading it, just vote for it" style (Naomi Kliein calls this the "Shock Doctrine")

Obama has already said this has to get DONE NOW! (Though what IT is, we don't know. Could be the Baucus bill, could be the Baucus bill with some deferential items put in it to appease Snowe, could be another bill.)

So we cannot wait, really. If we wait, the bill will be passed right in front of our noses, with no time to object.

57. Did you mean to say, "America: Love it or Leave it?" I worked with the Obama campaign. I continue
to work with him, with actions both great and small, especially when he is working with the progressives who worked so hard to get him elected. At this time, I'm still hoping I'll be supporting President Obama into early 2017.

However, I, like most progressives, believe it's undemocratic to not speak up when we disagree with our leaders. So, I'll continue to do that as well.

" To announce that there should be no criticism of the President, or that we should stand by the President right or wrong, is not only servile and unpatriotic, it is morally treasonable to the American public."
Which word do you like best? Servile is the one I really think fits.

59. Both words fit well
I am a little perplexed by the suggestion in some posts here since we elected President Obama we should now go quietly away and let his administration and our legislators do whatever they want without expressing any opinions. I think the difference between Democrats and Republicans is that we do not, generally, follow the leaders of our party unquestioningly down whatever path they go.

60. It is just stupid
They think that in politics, with the opposition screaming hyperbole, filling the streets and airwaves, that we should sit quietly and await a pat on the head from on high? No, I think they stand with the baggers, their gig here is to shut us up so the baggers have the stage to themselves. That is the only reason to tell Democrats to shut up, so that Republicans can be heard. So they snark and shush for the GoP.
