"Gov. To Hyatt: Rehire Workers Or We're Banning Business"
Housekeeping Staff Fired From Boston-Area Hotels Last Month

BOSTON -- Gov. Deval Patrick will tell all state employees to stop doing official business with Hyatt unless the company rehires the housekeeping staff it fired from Boston-area hotels last month.

Patrick sent a letter to Hyatt CEO Mark Hoplamazian in Tuesday that expressed his concern for the impacted workers and called the company’s treatment of its long-term employees “substandard.”

The governor said he plans to meet with a group of affected workers this week to better understand the circumstances surrounding their discharge.

read more here.....He is really taking them to the woodshed on this.

edit to add....I got a copy of his letter in an e-mail from his office today....I'm glad that it is getting some press here.

11. I'm not sure if this is the reason Hyatt gave
but it seems they fired 100 house-keepers and hired temps in order to save money on Healthcare benefits.

12. Then it seems like Hyatt should use their mega bucks
to pressure congress to pass a strong public option.

14. Yes -- in all fairness, insurance premiums are truly hurting employers (especially
the smaller ones - but the big ones as well). Sure sounds like a win-win to me.

21. Exactly, if this really was the reason, it could be used
in a positive way to insist on a Single Payer system, or at least to do away with any notion of mandatory insurance for individuals or businesses.

I don't know whose idea it was to attach health care to employment, but it has to have been the stupidest idea ever. I suspect it must have been a Republican.

13. Ahhh -- I think Microsoft got in trouble for something similar several years
ago. They didn't fire anybody, just hired temps and then didn't renew their contracts when the time came that they had to become permanent hires. Same reason -- to save on employment insurance and health benefits.

16. Yes...they "outsourced" the contract
to a Florida agency....but....get this....they then expected the current housekeepers to TRAIN THEIR REPLACEMENTS! Aaaaagggghhhhh!

19. It's too rare that even one of our own does the right thing. Kudos to Gov. Patrick.
If Hyatt can't afford to pay for insurance, they should come out publicly for Medicare 4 All, not outsource their housekeeping to a company that doesn't pay for healthcare for a whole other set of employees and their families.

Mass. health care has turned out to be an abysmal failure. FIX IT.

23. I guess the economy is back to the point where you can't just lay people off in mass without people
taking notice and getting backlash.
