Thank you for teaching us about Republican moral values. An open letter to James Dobson
Edited on Sun Apr-15-07 04:33 PM by MN Against Bush
Dear Dr. Dobson,

Over the years we have heard a great deal about moral values from you. You have taught us that in order to be good Christians we must all learn to embrace the values of the Republican Party.

In other words when we see a person starving on the street with their hands held out begging for help we are supposed to tell them to get a job and move on. We can't afford programs to help the poor when we got no-bid Halliburton contracts that need to be doled out. We all know that Jesus would have done the same thing, he cared way more about ensuring that the rich got richer than he did about helping the poor.

And of course to be a good Christian we must constantly express our contempt for the gay lifestyle. We can embrace people like Newt Gingrich who married his high-school teacher and then decided to have an affair and leave her while she was hospitalized and undergoing treatment for cancer instead. After all at least he was not in a consensual and loving relationship with someone of the same sex. Obviously Jesus would have also condemned people for loving one another just like you do.

In order to practice the Republican morality you have spent all these years preaching we can not forget to make sure that abortions are less safe, while at the same time denying women contraception so that we can ensure more unwanted pregnancies. We don't need to get rid of abortion everywhere though of course, people like Tom DeLay and Jack Abramoff have helped ensure that corporations are able to force the women who work in their factories in Saipan to have an abortion. That is the morality that you and your party have taught us, forced abortions are fine if they increase corporate profits but if a woman in these fifty states is in a crisis, well she always has the coat-hanger to go back to.

Yes Mr. Dobson that is what you tell us that is what it means to be pro-life, but of course there is more. In order to be pro-life you must also be willing to drop bombs on a country and kill over 600,000 civilians. After all the country you are bombing possessed weapons of mass destruction. Well ok, maybe not but Al Qaeda did have a presence there. Of course that Al Qaeda presence was not much of an issue until after Bush started his slaughter, but hey they are there now. Alright so maybe it is not such a good argument to talk about Al Qaeda, but you know what Saddam was torturing people that is certainly justification to go to war, right? Oh wait, I forgot about Abu Ghraib. But hey I am sure Jesus would have no problem with having naked prisoner pyramids and running electrical currents through men's testicles now would he?

Yes Mr. Dobson, you have taught us so much about morality. Without you some people just might believe in evolution, but you have completely discredited that theory. After all you very clearly have not evolved, you are still the same person you were in the stone age.

Sincerely,

A concerned citizen of the world

(Before anyone asks, yes I did send him this letter)

5. Thanks for posting.
One of the most horrifying moments I had when traveling the country and meeting cousins in preparation for writing my family history was going to Everett, Washington and meeting one cousin and her husband.

A very sweet woman on the surface-- was a nurse, and was very helpful in finding old family pictures and sharing stories. But at dinner, she began talking about "Dr. Dobson" with this reverence in her voice that gave me the heebee-geebies.

I needed that dinner to end as soon as possible so I could get back to my hotel and take a shower!

6. Part of the reason I really like to pick on Dobson...
is I have a much closer personal connection to him than most other Republicans unfortunately. My parents gave me a Dobson book when I was about twelve years old to teach me about sex (I laugh at them about that now because they have both become quite progressive since then). My Grandmother gave me a Dobson book for my highschool graduation gift(she still loves Dobson unfortunately), and I had a roommate in college who went to Dobson's school out in Colorado. He was a very nice guy, but hearing some of the things he was taught really made me quiver.

I have had a bit too much exposure to Dobson, so now I want to expose him for who he is.

21. Yuck.
I got one of those.

http://www.amazon.com/How-be-happy-though-young/dp/0800709705/ref=sr_1_3/102-3957471-7837740?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1176689429&sr=8-3

What a load of horseshit. This woman claimed how evil the lyrics of groups like The Eagles and Santana were, and how they made young people want to have sex.

Even as a 7th grader in 1979, I was reading this stuff thinking, "Huh?"

I am so glad you sent it to him,but I doubt if the coward will ever read it.He probably has a whole staff ready to proof read all the E-mails that have a glimmer of truth in them so they can delete them before his precious "Christian" can see them. That's the republican way. But I salute you for E-mailing it anyway!:patriot:

9. I am afraid it will be easily written off as strawmen mixed with insults
You need to quote him in order to legitimately criticize him. Creating a caricature of his positions will be easily written off. He probably gets alot of hate mail.

17. My audience knows Dobson's position on abortion, gay rights and war...
People know that Dobson follows the GOP platform to a T, and I believe my description of what Dobson stands for in the letter is accurate. There is no doubt that the Republicans do support cutting social services for the poor while they hand out massive contracts to Halliburton. There is no doubt that they do condemn gays while embracing adulterers like Newt Gingrich. There is no doubt that they want to end safe methods of obtaining abortion and restrict women's access to contraceptives. There is no doubt they support sweatshops which force their female employees to have abortions. There is no doubt they support the war in Iraq. There is no doubt they support torture. None of the things I brought up are strawmen they are based on actual positions of the Republican Party.

But did I insult Dobson? I sure hope so because people like him need to be ridiculed mercilessly.

20. Well they said this
"While affirming that human life begins with fertilization (the union of sperm and egg) his interpretation of Scripture leads him to believe that the prevention of fertilization is not morally wrong. However, he would oppose any method of birth control that acts after fertilization and terminates a conceived human life by preventing its implanting in the womb."

and this:

"And finally, I want to thank President George W. Bush. He is not a perfect man, and I have not agreed with some of his decisions."

It's not a question of ridiculing somebody. It is a question of ridiculing somebody in a way that will carry some weight outside of the choir.

Here is what they don't agree with Bush's decision on...
Edited on Sun Apr-15-07 09:21 PM by MN Against Bush
Colorado Springs, Colo. –– Focus on the Family Senior Bioethics Analyst Carrie Gordon Earll issued the following statement today in response to President Bush’s endorsement of over-the-counter status for Plan B, the so-called emergency contraceptive, for women 18 and older:

“President Bush has a solid track record supporting parent’s rights but he’s missed the mark with this endorsement. Selling this drug over the counter to any adult who wants to buy it virtually guarantees that it will end up in the hands of teenage girls without their parents’ knowledge or their doctor’s supervision. Over-the-counter status for Plan B — regardless of the age requirement — is an invitation for adult men to pressure underage girls to have sex with the promise of an easily accessible magic pill to prevent or abort a pregnancy.

"At best, it is unrealistic for the president and the FDA to believe teens won’t have access to these pills and won’t be at risk of exploitation; at worst, it is irresponsible for them to assume an age limit for over-the-counter access is a safe and parent-respecting compromise."

So they disagree with Bush because they think he is not restrictive enough on contraceptives. Kind of sheds some light on the two quotes you put up doesn't it?

As far as my argument style goes, you have to remember different people respond to different styles of argument. I am in some sense preaching to the choir, and I think it is very important to preach to the choir so you can help your choir to think about the issues in different ways. But some people who are not part of the choir might read this, and I tried to write it in a way that would appeal to a common person as well. Some people like to read real academic factual arguments filled with quotes and statistics, and these arguments are great to use on many occasions. But you also have to be able to cut through everything and lay down a smackdown once in a while as well. Some people are motivated more by the really well documented arguments and others are motivated by the passionate arguments. We need both types of arguments brought forward if we are going to win, we can't pretend that everyone is going to be convinced by using the same argument style over and over again.

10. Great letter! Have you gotten Dobson's reply yet?
<snip>
James Dobson: Focusing on Himself

How James Dobson, leader of Focus on the Family, sets himself up as the moral authority of the nation -- taken from his own words and from other media reports

By Brian Elroy McKinley

<snip>
The following are quotes from Dobson and from other media reporting about Dobson's activities. In them you'll find Dobson clearly putting his ideas forth as the Gospel truth and asking all of us to act on them as if they were directly from God. The text in bold is my emphasis.

In the January 1995 Focus on the Family Newsletter Dobson writes:

"Focus on the Family immediately joined the Family Research Council and other conservative organizations in getting out the word. Using our radio program and this monthly letter, we asked for a massive response from our listeners."
"Again, Focus on the Family threw down the gauntlet, We devoted our broadcast to this danger on three separate days, almost begging our listeners to flood the White House, the attorney general, and the Congress with letters of protest."

"One issue concerned the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child, which has worried me for years. I devoted a portion of my letter in January 1993, and again in July 1994, to the threat posed by this dangerous document. More than 150 countries around the world have already adopted it within their borders."

"The state of Oregon narrowly passed the nation's first euthanasia law, which almost defies comprehension. If the courts permit it to take effect, physicians will be allowed to assist their willing patients in killing themselves. The implications of this legislation are so ominous that I will devote a future letter to that topic."

"In May, I discussed this legislation in my monthly letter and warned of the many dangers that lie ahead."

"What ... I have called a `civil war of values' continues to rage."

"Focus on the Family will continue to fight for moral values. And we'll try to keep you informed of the threats coming against the institutions of marriage and parenthood. But we do need your financial support to get the job done."

19. You are so right...
I find it so ironic that the right-wing looks down so heavily on long-haired sandle-wearing hippies who go around talking about peace and helping the poor. Do they not realize that Jesus was basically your stereotypical hippie? I don't know if he smoked pot, but he certainly looked like a hippie and had the values of a hippie. And I say that very respectfully too, I love hippies but the right-wing most certainly does not.

I would say people like Dobson are pretty strong evidence against either evolution OR intelligent design!
