I've posted twice here about activities in the NY 23rd ahead of the special election to replace Congressman McHugh. McHugh was recently approved as Secretary of the Army. this is traditionally Republican district, very rural with several small cities : Oswego, Watertown (Fort Drum) , Fulton and Plattsburg (former home of an Air Force base). The kicker is that this district recently elected a Democrat, Daniel Aubertine to the New York State Senate, thereby putting the Democrats in control of the Senate for the first time in ages.
So, I was push polled twice, before and after McHugh was approved. The poll was clearly aimed against Bill Owens, the Democratic candidate and the Conservative Party candidate. The Conservative Party candidate represents a threat because the Republican Party nominated someone who is a moderate on GLTB rights and abortion rights in an attempt to attract Democratic voters. The Democratic candidate, Bill Owens, is in favor of civil union but not same sex marriage. The calls were a hoot, because they attacked Owens from the Left over GLBT rights and from the right over the Health CAre Reform.
I wrote in to the local weekly describing in broad terms what a push poll is and warning people that they are a method to spread innuendo. This morning I got a call from a local public radio station and I described the calls in detail. Granted, the ratings for the public radio stations may be low, but the word is getting out.
