Ken Burns w/ Rachel Maddow

Some of the best television I have seen in along time ..... nice job Rachel

Ken talked about his upcoming 12 hour / 6 part series on PBS about our National Parks.

Both Rachel & Ken were great. They talked about people being happy and that the government can help in that too.

Ken Burns' 'National Parks' pays tribute to the men behind the idea
Politicians and philanthropists pushed to set aside breathtaking, unspoiled land. The filmmaker appreciates this, and you will too.

1. "National Parks" WTF? Isn't that just another socialist plot?
Edited on Thu Sep-24-09 09:24 PM by SpiralHawk
OMG. We have to end this madness, and also Social Security, Medicare, Interstate Highways, and those sick, socialist Fire Departments that are so threatening and ungodly to all the Republicon HOMELANDERS (but not to Americans).

Did you notice that this show is airing on PBS. That should be a Big Clue for all you socialism-deniers out there.

had a major part in it.

Theodore Roosevelt and the National Park System

Theodore Roosevelt, the noted conservation president, had an impact on the national park system extending well beyond his term in office. As chief executive from 1901 to 1909, he signed legislation establishing five national parks: Crater Lake, Oregon; Wind Cave, South Dakota; Sullys Hill, North Dakota (later redesignated a game preserve); Mesa Verde, Colorado; and Platt, Oklahoma (now part of Chickasaw National Recreation Area). Another Roosevelt enactment had a broader effect, however: the Antiquities Act of June 8, 1906. While not creating a single park itself, the Antiquities Act enabled Roosevelt and his successors to proclaim ãhistoric landmarks, historic or prehistoric structures, and other objects of historic or scientific interestä in federal ownership as national monuments.

Roosevelt did not hesitate to take advantage of this new executive authority. By the end of 1906 he had proclaimed four national monuments: Devils Tower, Wyoming, on September 24 and El Morro, New Mexico, Montezuma Castle, Arizona, and Petrified Forest, Arizona, together on December 8. He was also prepared to interpret the authority expansively, protecting a large portion of the Grand Canyon as a national monument in 1908. By the end of his term he had reserved six predominantly cultural areas and twelve predominantly natural areas in this manner. Half the total were initially administered by the Agriculture Department and were later transferred to Interior Department jurisdiction.

Later presidents also used the Antiquities Act to proclaim national monuments÷105 in all. Forty-nine of them retain this designation today; others have been retitled national parks or otherwise reclassified by Congress. The Antiquities Act is the original authority for about a quarter of the 378 areas composing the national park system in 1999.

Recalling this legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, it seems appropriate that he is now commemorated by five park system areas÷as many as honor Abraham Lincoln and more than for any other president. Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site in New York City, Sagamore Hill National Historic Site in Oyster Bay, New York, Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site in Buffalo, Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota, and Theodore Roosevelt Island in Washington, DC, trace his career and memorialize his contributions to America. The National Park Service, administrator of these parklands and the many others Roosevelt made possible, has particular cause to honor his memory.

You'll notice the Republicans rarely mention him

3. I work at a Park and the buildings they built in the 30s are still in daily use
the Superintendent's 'residence' (now the Admin center) is a classic and beautiful building. Arched fireplaces, hardwood floors all built out of the local limestone.

I am REALLY looking forward to the series, the Park system is having a "Fee Free" weekend next week and they will be showing excerpts of the film, so visit your local National Park this weekend for free!!

:hi:

7. Built in the '30s?
By that communistic, socialistic, fascist, anti-christian, WPA program Roosevelt came up with to indoctrinate good, working people into his radical agenda? (do I need the sarcasm tag?)

There's a lot of WPA in Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis. There are several places where you can see "WPA" and the date carved into the stone work. I feel bad that many of the younger ones have no idea what that means and what a valuable program it was.

9. My uncle was in the CCC
learned enough there that he was able to start a very successful landscaping business. Once he became successful he also became a Republican. Drove my dad nuts. Every so often they'd have an argument about it that would end with my father telling uncle that he'd "be living in a shack with an outdoor toilet if it wasn't for Roosevelt".

And that was probably true.

4. Ken Burns is a great American.
Edited on Thu Sep-24-09 09:55 PM by lunatica
It's the truth. He really is what a true patriot is all about. No hate. No jingoism. Just pride and love for Americans and our physical country. It is really unique and breathtaking and part of who we are. On the Rachel Maddow show he said that if it weren't for the far seeing insights of our Presidents to create National Parks only the very rich would enjoy them today as part of their McMansion communities. that the Grand Canyon and Yosemite would be totally bordered by rich peoples' houses and the rest of us would never know they existed.

6. well, he did make the point to say it wasn't socialism... or else when you call the fire department
at 3am, that's socialism... or the troops risking their lives in afghanistan is socialism. burns is very passionate about whatever he is talking about. you can hear it in his voice. he is very amazing at describing things and such.
