I would figure the thugs in the US strive for a little more sophistication as far as dealing with dissidents and undesirables compared to those who worked for the Soviet government.

5. Not sure where you're going here, but I'd say:
The grease stops the squeak every time, but there is no guarantee you'll do anything other than bend the nail when you try to pound it down. Bent nails can be a monumental pain in the ass.
