1. Michael Moore needs a strong editor
The movies I've seen are walking a fine line between being good and being annoying, and I think they would be helped by someone occasionally telling the man "no."

44. I was responding to the person above me
I'm not a litcridiot (but I like the word!).

I think that Moore shows many partial truths, and one-sided truths. I wouldn't call his movies Truth (with a capital t). Hence my "What constitutes the "truth?""

Partial truths have a time and a place, but I think a good film partner could turn Moore's partial truths into deeper truths.

46. I don't know that there is any truth with a "capital " any more, anyway

I think that Moore has a certain documentary/commentary style to his movies (don't know the proper name for the style) and that's what has made him popular- people like his off-hand, hand-camera, film-student-type approach.

Edited on Fri Sep-25-09 06:29 PM by pitohui
i love his movies and every time i think he can't "top" himself, he finds another way to do it, such as the trip to gitmo in "sicko" where "we just want the same care the evildoers get"

THAT was film making

i don't know if there is another film maker on his level working, maybe lynch, maybe herzog

the man is a genius hidden under a baseball cap

even if you didn't like the message, i don't know how you can dislike the images and the imagination that goes into these...

what other movie maker could snatch documentary of the year away from "winged migration" AND MAKE YOU LIKE IT????

7. Michael Moore isn't a journalist, he's an entertainer.
As the product of an entertainer, I generally enjoy his movies.

However, they should not be confused with documentaries.

18. Then why are his movies always nominated for Best Documentary?
NOT Best Drama or Best Comedy?

He IS a documentarian. He has never been sued, because he tells the truth and makes sure his lawyers check everything thoroughly. If he had been sued for libel, your characterization would be accurate.

Some people just don't like the truth the way he tells it.

26. He "tells the truth" in the same way Glenn Back does.
Moore's movies are embellished truth. He sensationalizes issues.

Beck hasn't been sued, either, for precisely that reason. His broadcasts are inflammatory versions of "truths".

39. Like Malcom X if you strip away the theatrical flourishes and analyze
what Moore is saying he, like Malcolm X, are a lot more conventional than the public perception is.

Is Capitalism broken, yes. Does he have a completely different system that will bring the benefits of capitalism without the problems, no.

In the end he is a mixed system reformist just like most intelligent people since Teddy Roosevelt.

to call people to action. He was interviewed on Realtime tonight and spoke about this new film
and his hope it will inspire the viewer to get the hell off their asses and demand change.

27. No. I dont "enjoy" them. They piss me off. That is what they are meant for
They make me completely livid (like I need the encouragement) at corporations, vapid stupidity, and greed.

I booed and hissed at the tv during Sicko and facepalmed during Bowling For Columbine.

I did enjoy Canadian Bacon however.

33. After I watched Fahrenheit 9/11 I went to anti Michael Moore web sites
and made a note of the "lies" in the movie, and then did my own fact checks. The "lies" were either not lies or not in the actual movie. Fahrenheit 9/11 is the only movie of his I have done this with.

His movies are done with a perspective. I don't see it as a problem (probably because I more often than not share the same perspective).

31. Entertainer and not a journalist
Even when I agree with his conclusions, I can't agree with his content. It is sloppy at best, and intentionally misleading at worst. He refuses to start with anything remotely resembling objectivity.

A poor argument is a poor argument whether or not I agree with it.

Therefore, his "over-the-topness" results in more people hearing his message.
