Doing some live interviews of the locals maybe? If this were the death of some washed up entertainer they would have everyone there with all their state of the art equipment. But for this all we get is some AP reporter on a telephone giving a report from his hotel room? Someone is trying to kill this story.

3. So true
The MSM treated the death of Michael Jackson like it had the gravity of Kennedy's assassination, the 9/11 terror attacks or Hurricane Katrina. When real news happens (like the brutal slaying of a government official in Kentucky), they don't notice it all that much it seems.

9. No joke. This man was murdered around Sept. 11/12, and we're just
recently hearing about it? Legs taped, federal ID attached?

What's the hold up?

Someone has been really trying to quell this, or protecting the county and the suspects. If there are any in that county.

24. Nobody is trying to kill the story.
There is no big media conspiracy. I've seen it on TV, and I've seen it in my own paper. Heck, I put a story about it in tomorrow's paper. Law enforcement was being tight-lipped, but now that more details have leaked out, I expect it will get a fresh round of coverage.

33. +1 but we are wasting our breath
When it is all over CNN tomorrow or Sunday they'll just complain about something else. Partisn right-wing and left-wing complaints about the media are practically identical. Not that I think the cable news is particularly good or quick off the mark, mind.

That's for sure.

And that is in stark contrast to the way the media treats many other stories.

I think the author's point stands. This story is sensational, to be sure. So why isn't the media pouncing on it as they normally do?

41. It's getting covered
It's the most commented story in the sn Francisco Chronicle (my local) right now, with >1000 comments in 5 hours (average is 2-300). MSM is just slow commit resources to a local story without detail. Now that the story has more-or-les confirmed details, they'll ramp up on it.

26. I wish the media would go there.
It's about 80 miles from Lexington, out of the bluegrass and into the mountains. It's not that difficult to get to. I wish they could see the desperation, the poverty, the drug epidemic, the crime rate, etc. These are my people and they have been neglected by the country for several years and the area has steadily declined into anarchy and drug dealing. I wish they could report the truth.

What else would they say, other than that they're very sad and they hope the investigation proceeds. The guy's computer wasn't found in the truck so I doubt they have any special knowledge of who did it.

37. They have knowledge of the area. Whether or not he had any concerns
about going there, or whether they ever considered the area to be unsafe. They may know what his hours were, what time he was likely to have gone there. And whether he was doing census work in the area at all. I have not seen anything that said he was.

Certainly not while the investigation is ongoing, if they think there's even a slight chance of mistakenly tipping someone off. I don't envy the investigators, a case like this presents a lot of challenges.
