this piece in Saturday's Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News/Philly.com

Driver shot in failed West Philly carjacking

A 30-year-old motorist was shot early yesterday in West Philadelphia after armed thugs unsuccessfully tried to carjack him and fired at him when he sped away to escape, police said.

The victim, whom police did not identify, was admitted in critical condition to the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania after the 1:25 a.m. ambush at 57th and Addison streets.

He was sitting at the intersection in his 2005 Range Rover, talking with a female pedestrian, when the masked gunmen approached his vehicle and tried to oust him from the driver's seat, police said.

When the motorist instead fled, the punks fired at him, hitting him in the head and back, police said.

********************************

This is what is passing for journalism here...these miscreants whoever they are should be found and tried and adjudicated to a long long sentence with every fiber of the law's being...BUT...WTF is it with the newspaper that they would describe perpetrators of a crime as 'punks' in a news article?

4. No...
that would be journalistically true if they used quotation marks. If the police say, "these motherfuckers shot the pregnant lady over there" the paper can either say:

The police sergeant stated, "These motherfuckers shot the pregnant lady over there" (unlikely that they would)

or

the police sergeant stated that the perpetrators shot a pregnant woman whose condition is blah blah blah.. much more likely)

3. And this

$11.75 in 1979. Piss-poor journalism that the article doesn't cite costs of living in 1979 (bread = 60 cents, minimum wage = $2.90, and so on) and yet they act as if $11.75 is livable today, never mind "too expensive". Then again, editorials are - by definition - meant to incite emotional response rather than anything approaching a complete picture...

6. 'thugs' in the opening sentence is arguably editorialising too
but you see that relatively often in news reports.
