I’ve been asked to spread the word that there will be a candlelight vigil tonight beginning at 5PM in front of Senator Nelson’s office in Orlando in support of the public option in the on-going health care reform battle.
As you or may not have heard, Senator Baucus’ plan is the main healthcare reform plan under consideration and it does not contain a meaningful public option accessible to all Americans. This means that the insurance companies will NOT face any meaningful competition after legislation is passed and will be free to conduct business as usual on their terms instead of ours.
If this bill passes in its present form containing NO public option but forcing all Americans to buy health insurance from private companies it will be a disastrous setback for healthcare access to all Americans but a huge windfall for insurance companies.
Voting on the bill is supposed to begin this Friday in the Senate Finance Committee so this may be our last opportunity to change Senator Nelson’s mind on this issue.
Senator Nelson has been one of several “blue dog” Democrats who has not supported the Public Option but is reported to be wavering on this issue as of late.
A strong showing of support for the public option tonight in front of his offices around Florida may help to change his mind.
If you cannot make the event, please be sure to at least CALL and write his office during business hours to express your strong support for a public option and make it clear that you do NOT want private mandates if there is no real public option available to all Americans.
Please spread the word to all of your progressive friends.
