Ban handguns? Supreme Court taking a new look
WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court says it will take up a challenge to Chicago's ban on handguns, opening the way for a ruling that could set off a vigorous new campaign to roll back state and local gun controls across the nation.

Victory for gun-rights proponents in the Chicago case is considered likely, even by supporters of gun control, in the latest battle in the nation's long and often bitter dispute over the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. A ruling against the city's outright ban could lead to legal challenges to less-restrictive laws across the country that limit who can own guns, whether firearms must be registered and how they should be stored.

1. Laws for "long guns" as they are known in Britain and handguns, should be seperated. nt

9. They already are.
FWIW, the gun-control lobby wants to ban the most popular long guns also, which is the point of the whole "assault weapon" fraud. Fortunately, D.C. v. Heller puts the kibosh on banning guns in common use for lawful purposes, so the issue is pretty much moot.

3. Chicago is going to lose.
Their ban is functionally identical to the one that got overturned in DC. Hopefully this sets the stage to reform bad laws elsewhere, such as the Sullivan Act here in New York.

4. DC's handgun ban was overturned last year -
- I would that that will set a precedent for this case.

6. "the nation's long and often bitter dispute" - No, Republicans such as Brady and
eletist politicos such as Feinstein/Schumer/Holder trying to stifle inalienable civil rights.

8. Nah, quite the opposite.
Obama's already done more for gun owners and sportsmen than Bush ever did. Compare that to Clinton who admitted that congressional leaders were right and he was wrong about the Assault Weapons Ban being an absolute loser in 1994.
