Meg Whitman: I focused on family instead of voting

By JULIET WILLIAMS, Associated Press Writer

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman said Tuesday that it wasn't until she was a chief executive in Silicon Valley that she realized why she should vote after sitting out elections for decades. She says the problems with government she confronted there inspired her to get involved in politics.

Whitman sought to explain her spotty voting record for the first time after delivering a speech to a Yolo County Republican women's group.

"I was focused on raising a family, on my husband's career, and we moved many, many times," she told reporters. "It is no excuse. My voting record, my registration record, is unacceptable."

During the state GOP convention in Indian Wells last weekend, Whitman repeatedly refused to answer questions about her voting record after The Sacramento Bee reported that the former eBay CEO was not registered to vote before 2002 and there was no evidence she had ever registered as a Republican before 2007.

1. Guess what, Meg?
Your voting record isn't just unacceptable!

It's fucking appalling!

And you want to be our Governor?

Oh, for fuck's sake.

I had family responsibilities too...worked outside the home...went to school...

I still had time to vote!

I hope they run her...we will mop the floor with her!

5. Yeah, I did too.
Even though she is 22, she still remembers it, especially the 1st time.

4. God is she ever going to get sick of this
grinding it in, over and over and over and over . . .

"Yeah, maybe I'll tell 'em I was too focused on family to vote . . . that's the right spin . . . it can't fail. They'll really go for that one."

6. how many times have I heard people saying that they don't register to vote
because it keeps them off the grid (don't have to do jury duty, other things) ...

Lame excuse ... often the voting booths were located IN SCHOOLS ... likely where her kids (family) were going, or a local church ...

I can understand if a person was unable to get to the voting booth because their employer didn't want a Dem elected, so the employer schedules the likely Dem voter to be working extended shifts during Election Day ... but this is the first time I'd heard the excuse "I was too busy focusing on my family!"

I guess that there were no anti-gay measures on the ballots while she had kids ...

7. She Voted With Her Checkbook...
Why bother wasting the time going to vote on election day when your real vote was cast with the checks you wrote months earlier. You don't get a thank-you note or invitation to a private meeting or get someone in power to answer your calls with that other vote.

So she was so focused on family yet ran her company. I'd love to hear what her children have to say about that. Didn't we hear the same song and dance from Bible Spice?

10. She taught her kids that voting isn't important?
It seems to me that focusing on your family is all the more reason to participate in the Democratic process.

Last I checked, they allow children in the booths.
