The Olympics have never been held in South America.
Interesting bit of trivia.

Looked it up, since Rio seems to be the major contender competing with Chicago.

It is "the Americas", which includes North, South and Central America.

it's my understanding that the IOC members who vote are from countried from all over the world.

Maybe I'm wrong.

People there walk upside down compared to us. Worst yet, their toilets spin the wrong way. And their beer has flavor.

16. Who said I was making an issue of it.
I simply googled it after not being able to recall a South American country hosting the Olympics.

And I shared the trivia. Others have done the same with me on DU and I've learned a lot of stuff.

I posted it as a novelty, not to stir a controversy. That's all.

In the end, if the games go to Rio, I think this will have figured into the equation.

24. But their Aug/Sept climate is very warm...........
Yeah, technically its late winter/early spring in Rio when the games are held, but the climate is very warm. Also don't forget that the 2000 Sydney games were held in September, which is their spring. But I would agree it seems the Olympics are very northern-hemisphere centric.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rio_de_Janeiro#Climate

Don't mistake me, I'd be happy yo see Chicago get the games, but I would also like to see SA get their chance.

28. Logistical Headaches Down South
First and foremost is being south of the Equator, the games wouldn't be held until October or November...falling right in the middle of many professional leagues that aren't too happy about the idea of suspending play or losing some of their best players for several weeks. Next Rio is an expensive city to travel to and stay in.

If I didn't live in Chicago, I'd be favoring Rio to get the game, but the money and exposure in Chicago is far greater and that will be what the IOC uses to determine who wins.

32. Interesting point on how it would cut into pro sports schedule...but I wonder if other voting
countries would take that into consideration. The only big thing Europe and Africa have going on is football (soccer) and doesn't their season wrap up sometime in the early summer? Not an expert, obviously...

Six summer, and six winter (includes Vancouver 2010), 8 of which have been in the United States.

I think that Brazil and the rest of Latin America deserve to host the Olympics.

We already had our turn, actually more than once, and so have the competing countries. I still remember the Barcelona Olympics and how one athletic lit the Olympic light by shooting an arrow into the cauldron. Spectacular.....

41. Montevideo is a lovely little city.
Colonia and Punta del Este are also cool. Uruguay is very small, but a neat country.

Then again, I simply LOVE Buenos Aires. I hope that Argentina gets to host The Olympics some day too.
